Thanks for all your responses ...

immtbiker, thanks for your vote of confidence.

I would not want accidently the volume to go up while I am in the subway and create unpleasant loudness!

I feel that in order to use an IEM with some usable volume, it may need an external amp - which is exactly what I am doing with an imod ... ok HM-801 is expected to boast higher sound quality.

The biggest draw for me was / is that 801 is an one box portable audiophile headphone solution - perhaps not for IEMs, definitely for full cans ... hmmm!

It begs a gain switch - even if it software controlled!

I would love to pair it with RE0 or RE252, single brand end to end solution!

Cheers
Sunil.

This shouldn't happen with the 801. I used my UE-10's and my JH-13's and all I hear is the pleasance known as complete silence. 80-85 db is insane! You might as well be at a bottling factory. What's the difference between the efficiency rating between the 13's and the ES3X. I know on the Miliet portable from TTVJ, I couldn't get silence at 0 volume with my 10's, but then again, I also had a constant cap squeal. With the Shadow, (an amp that I love), I am hearing music at 0 volume.
I notice as the battery starts to go on the 801's, there is a cap hum, but that is supposed to be fixed in newer revisions of the software.

Taking size into consideration, even though the iPod Classic is much smaller than the 801's, w_mcmanus and I found that the iPod sans an amp, weighed almost as much or more as the larger 801. It must be due to the HD in the iPod and his protective case.

My wife told me that someone called telling her that someone has been sending me a parcel that weights about 2kg. Could it be the 801? I'm excited.

Hope this post may inject some positive energy to the thread.

The review/impressions of the SQ of the 801 is nothing but positive. So I guess we should be positive as well . This is the best thing to keep us happy and to pass the long waiting time.

The 801 arrived this afternoon! I was able to jet home quickly at lunch and pick it up. I gave it a very fast listen and am about to settle in for some work and will plug in. Thus far the sound is astounding but the volume is very very sensitive for the ES3X. Basically, as soon as both channels kick in, I'm already maxed out. I'll try with the UM2's and Etys later today and then the R252s and OK1s. I do think that IEMs will require a separate amp module than earbuds and regular headphones.

I also think my SD card is flakey.

I'm using a Kodak 8GB SDHC 2 card and it doesn't seem to be pleasing the 801 at all. I'm going to pick up another card after work tonight with the hopes that we can something more stable up and running.

I'm going to A/B against the iPhone 3GS which is said to have excellent sound (and I certainly enjoy it) and then I'll move onto some fun tests like using it straight from my computer at work and comparing with the Compass.

For those thinking this is heavy, it is pretty close in weight to the iPhone and 160 GB Classic.

I'm pretty sure there are 2 different distribution points. one from the US (east coast...NYC or Brooklyn/Queens) and one from asia for our eastern world friends.
Fang told me as soon as the HE-5 and HiFiMan business expands, he will be able to have the units mass produced in Asia, and getting a HiFiMan should be as easy and as trustworthy as getting an iPod.

Through my friendship with Fang I see that he is a man of vision, and has plans for products that we could never imagine even in our wildest dreams. He has ideas, and he is progressing towards making those visions come to fruition.
That, and the fact that he is honest and sincere, should hopefully, make him successful. I genuinely wish him all of the luck in the world and wish more distributors/manufacturers had Fang's business credo.

He practices what he preaches. Look how much money he invests in giveaway products for Head-Fi Meets. Ray and Vinnie are the only other manufacturerss that are as generous as Fang, and I hope they all make a handsome living. They deserve it. Nate is generous also, but he is not in it for the money. Nate sells things at his cost. More of a hobby of passion for n_maher.
