Question: how is the gain for the IEMs ... I would like to have a gain option (low / high) to switch between IEMs and Over the ear headphones ...

I'd appreciate experiences and suggestions

Thanks

PS: Mine is on preorder batch #2

The gain option is one of my concerns as well because I would be pairing this with the UM3x too. From one of the chinese forum, the review sample was said to work well with full size headphones but not too well with iems as there is little volume control. I rmb this has been mentioned by Edwood as well. Wonder if this issue has been rectified.

I believe there is no gain switch. The current amp seems to be almost dead-silent but the volume controlling is very sensitive with IEMs. I think Hifiman or 3rd parties will be making an amp-module more suitable for IEMs in the future, or at least it's been speculated.

No gain switch according to all the impressions and the amp is pretty quiet even when using with the ES3X according to Edwood and Sasaki.

I use mine with everything from the JH-13's to HD800's with no problems. This unit uses a standard rotating switch. It's not digital or like on an iPod.
You can pretty much find any volume group that you would want for each headphone.
I don't know if I would use it for a 600 ohm Beyer, but 32-300Ω are pretty agreeable.

The problem, at least with the ES3X is that even with NO volume, on an iPod Classic or an iPhone, the sound is quite loud. Not deafening, but enough to indicate to my ears that it is at the max volume I would want it to be at. If the HM-801 is anything like those units, then plenty of people will want to have a bit more flexibility in adjusting the volume.

No volume, and all you hear are the voices inside your head.

There might be a trace of some sound, but it's negligible. I hear more with the Shadow.

I'm serious I know it sounds insane, but if one uses the volume limiter and cranks it ALL the way down, then plugs in the ES3X, with theoretically NO volume, I'm getting a good 80-85 db going on.

I'm hoping that the future has a nice little amp module from either Head-direct or Ray which will provide a better degree of volume control.
