Zana Deux or Isabella - Page 2

I was the one who suggested to Vinnie to maybe incorporate the DAC/headamp in one box. I love his DAC. I would jump all over this if he does it, but I would also want to be confident his headphone section would be a very good. So far it looks like mixed reviews for the Amphora.

Really? I thought that the reviews had high opinions on the Amphora. Can you show me the link that shows the contrary? I must have missed something.

Thanks.

You are right, there is nothing negative on the sound quality. I thought there was, but what it was, was people questioning the parts used in the amp, saying is was nothing more than a Cmoy. Of course we know this is bogus.

Isabellina + Zana Deux = Best choice from my point of view. That or the chord DAC64.

I would opt for the Isabella.
Not heard it personally. But from reading several positive reviews, and having personal experience with other RWA products, I don't see how you can do much wrong with one.

The only problem with the amphora/isabilina combo is its missing the tube line stage which I really want to finish the setup with a tube amp even though Im sure the amphora board sounds good.

Two thoughts on this: 1. headphone amps like the Zana Deux seem to hold their value in the used market much better than "traditional" two channel gear that is primarily designed for speaker rigs. I bet you could sell the Zana Deux in a few years at only a small haircut to current retail but would take a bigger hit when you sell a preamp/DAC on Audiogon. (Non-headphone stereo equipment just does not hold its value in the used market like headphone gear seems to. Just check out the yawning gap between retail and used prices on Audiogon compared to the For Sale forume on Head-fi.) 2. Do you really need a preamp? If you only are going to use a single source, you may be paying extra for the preamp functionality of the Isabella that you just won't need.

Thanks minimus, I have decided to go with the isabellina. I havent decided on the eddie current amp yet. Waiting to hear reviews of the two balanced amps first. Paying for the preamp was one of the reasons I was looking toward the zd. I would perfer that all my money go toward the specific needs that I have which is headphones, not speakers. This way I think I will get the most quality for the doller.

The reason most headphone gear holds value at the moment is because the field is still pretty new. With speakers, you can buy a 40 year old McIntosh amp and still get great performance. But you can't buy a 40 year old headphone amp - the market hasn't been there long enough and it's still small. Give it another 10 or 20 years of growth, and you'll see bargain used headphone equipment. Headphones have only taken off in the last five years or so. It's not like speakers, where I got a deal on my Quads, which are about 20 years old.

That said, anything from Moth or Eddie Current tends to hold value quite well. It took a year of searching, negotiation and a few close calls to land the Si2A3. I'm also glad I picked up the Cicadas when I did - they're impossible to find.

Definitely try them out. People have all sorts of viewpoints and say funny things. Once you hear them, you'll probably make a decision in two minutes.

I have heard both, and both are truly excellent as headphone amps. The DAC in the Isabella is also outstanding, and it is a very nice combined package.

The issue for me is value. The Zana is very good sounding to be sure, but I didn't think it sounded better than some less expensive tube amps I have heard, at least driving my headphones. The thing about the Isabella is that the DAC and preamp are stellar, as well as the excellent headphone amp function. So while VERY expensive (IMO), it does have a lot of value if all the parts are utilized, since they are all top-notch.

JMO, of course.

I'm personally interested in how good the Isabellina is stacked against top-end CD players like my Densen. If it can better the internal DAC and offer superb audio via the USB in then that would indeed be a very tempting proposition...

Here's a combo idea: Isabella with Headphone amp module only + Outboard DAC

Ken from ALO loves the headphone amp in the Isabella and said it is one of the best he's ever heard. (Unfortunately it was not at CanJam.) But he uses a different DAC to feed the Isabella. (I don't remember which one but you could ask him).

What headphones are you using with this new gear, OP?

Just so you guys know, there is a thread over in the alo section that talks about the upcoming Isabellina HPA. this is basically a Isabellina with the headphone amp, headpone jack out front, and a center mounted volume control. here is the link to the discussion.

I already sighned up for the isabellina hpa which I will trade upmy isabellina for. That should hold me till october when I can attach a tube amp to it. I also considering a fully upgraded wa 5 with the treasure tube set. i think it might sing well with the isabellina.
