Has this been done before, and if so, was it successful. I am thinking of using 2 to avoid the problems with the virtual ground circuit (and building up a charging circuit, most likely using one of the TI solutions). Just as I thinking of using an amplifier, but will need it to be very portable to be worthwhile, and would prefer to be continuously replacing batteries. And yes, I all the charging management IC's are in SMD format, this is not going to b e a problem, as I have suitable SMD soldering experience.

Most stay away from Li-Ion due to the complexity of charging, not having it catch on fire, etc. I don't see why you couldn't do it though if you have enough experience with Li-Ion to ensure you don't have issues.

EDIT
Just saw the other post. I think I will end up ordering 2 Li-Ion cells, and the charger IC, and test it out.

What he has in that link you provided is 7.4v @ 230mAH. Not much better that a standard 9v (which would be about 7.4v @ 250mAh depending upon internal cell configuration)
Most use NiMH as they are easy to charge with a constant current source.
