Hey

I've been eyeing up the PRO900's but would like to know if there is anything else I should be looking at for a closed headphones for mainly Prog Rock/Metal in the same price range (£300 or less). I'll be using them with a laptop+D10 or D2(hopefully a H140 soon)+D10.

Cheers

You can check out the PL/Pro-650, or you can try the GMP 8.35 D Monitor.

PRO900's are supposed to be very bass heavy, great if you like that kind of thing. DT990's are also pretty nice for bass, DT880s being more neutral. Grados might be worth looking into if you're into your rock/metal. Sennheiser HD650 might be worth a shot as well coming in at around £270 in the UK. AKGs are more analytical if you like hearing the details.

It's all very well listing what genres you're into but it might also be worth sharing what you like to hear from those genres. Do you want bass/highs/energy/fun/detail etc? You will probably get a better answer that way.

Good luck.

PRO 900 aren´t that bass heavy really by far the most neutral headphone I ever owned. Especially if you apply cotton wool then you can adjust the bass volume very easilly. Can even make them bass light like the K701

Maybe with the cotton wool mod like you said, then a agree, but i personally felt this modding was killing what's so impressive (and pleasant) about this headphones, the so deep and vibrant yet very controled bass. That's a pretty nice mod though, giving a nice option for whoever want more tame headphones out of PRO900.

To Aradreth:
PRO900 are awesomes HP , witch mean they'll do pretty good for almost every kind of music IMO,but i still think they're not the best you could get for this genre (music) and this budjet.I think DT990 do better for your music, vocal are more detailed , and the whole high freq. spectrum seem more tame , witch is better for music with alot of guitar, cymbal and ..... every sound that come out of a drum ! (Not a pro of these things !) Plus they can give all the bass and dynamist every kind of metal song would need. Finally the open design will add a very enjoying "airy" sound so everything sound natural.
It may look like im not having much praise for PRO900, but its not true at all , these headphones will always make me feel MY music like no other headphones, that's for sure.... But that's another style !

The stock Pro 900s are wayward up to an almost satirical point IMO. The bass is just ridiclous car audio-ish, and there is not a trace of warmth in the mids. The only thing I like about it is its soundscape, guess I have compatible ears in respect of that US thingway thing.

They have great modding potential though. My buddy NoXter modded his pair with different taped pads and lots of felt bestiary, the result was somewhat a mixture between an E9 and a K271. Not exactly mids king still, but extremely enjoyable with instrumental and syth-heavy stuff.

If I was after a pair of open cans I'd look at the Grado's but seeing as I'll be using these in places where other people are working that isn't an option.

I'd probably lean towards more fun sounding headphones but as for bass/highs it is far to dependent on the song for me to say, so I'd probably prefer a well rounded headphone over something that excels in one specific area.

In respect to the DT990, open=no go.
Could you tell me what you think of the PRO900 in comparison to the HFI-780's (which I've heard and like)?

Rakoon if you apply to much you as mention are getting K701 light bass. That is not necessarily bad though I ran that for quite a while before I started to feel the lack of bass again . I like it default but it got even tighter by applying the felt to the back of the cup to increase the weight so it can´t vibrate and some cotton wool. Since there is just a tad to much bass stock at least on the Canamp which gives a lot of body to the music. Slee Solo maybe I could run stock but it´s also on the warm side of things

But for me the mid range is the sweetest part and it´s actually on the warmer side of neutral on my amps. I can´t relate to cold mid range at all the PRO 900 is slightly on the warm side but as mentioned pretty damn neutral and very natural sounding.

Treble is the part I like the least since it´s so unforgiving in term of sibilance. But I love the high hats, cymbals etc I get on the Slee Solo. The PRO 900 has always been good with drums know it´s perfect with this amp

If you can increase your budget a little bit, I would recommend you to go with the ALO-780 (Modified Ultrasone 780) or the Audio-Technica ESW10JPN instead. Both are the best headphones that I have heard for Prog-Metal music.

If the pound wasn't so weak I'd probably be getting the ALO-780's but as it is they cost ~£400 without shipping/import tax (although I'm still might considering it...).

Forget about the fancy cable it really isn't worth it, i've been there done it and worn the tee-shirt.

You can get the Ultrasone HFI-780 for £139.99 from a very good UK based dealer.

Do you really want to pay an extra £260 plus taxes for some fancy dan cable?

Is the recabling such a miracle on the 780s that the stock cable simply "ruins" it?
I confess I'm a bit skeptic that paying more for the cables than the cans would really 2do it".
Prog rock and post rock are my most played genres at the moment and the stock 780s are simply wonderful to listen to.

The ALO-780 is an actual mod though with internal modifications which will change the sound characteristics.
