DIY meets

We have started to see some DIY meets - and hope this trend continues... many have seen this on another site, but it looks like DIY is evolving, and I would like to make this a more regularly featured part of meets, not just patching gear that craps out at the event. Thank goodness the photographers have day jobs.

Sounds like a neat idea - I'm all for it! You can learn tons from watching other people make stuff.

And, have a howl or two watching folks take the wrong turn at EVERY fork in the road. But, we have to laugh at our own follies first.

In this case, we have no arcy-sparky, but fuses are the most valuable commodities in such an event.

I'd love to help try and make a "DIY Jam" happen. If anyone is seriously interested in helping, please let me know.

i have a monster variac - saves many a fuse and reduces the palpitations somewhat ..dB

Has anyone else seen the Burning Amp Festival? Maybe Head-Fi should have something like that.

Yes, I had some bits at Burning Amp, and very much think that is a good pattern - but, there are fewer of us, and we are spread out, so everyone would have to travel. Then there is the issue of what type facility (doubt my local library is down with all that, as well as the liability angle.

All that said, there are those I'd love to fly in (you know who you are), and if it were Dallas / Austim, we have Pete Millett and Alexander Cavalli local - DIY and design, all at the same meet.

Awesome. It's great to see some DIY meets finally happening. We had a very small one in NYC just recently. I can't remember a regular meet where the idea wasn't tossed about.

It's hard to predict what kinds of things happen at a meet. DIY meets ever more so. Depends on who's there, and what you organize. My thinking is, first get some happening and let the members do what they do. If it catches on, and people start asking for something particular, it'll evolve.

Kudos for doing it, but what's with the classified?

Sounds like fun

I can imagine a diy build classroom at meets, where people can buy a kit like a cmoy, ra-1 or mini3 and build one that day. Maybe they have to bring their own soldering iron.

'Classified' is semi-serious - the idea was to post pics, then make no further blah, blah, blah comments. So, those who know more or less what is going on will appreciate it more without a bunch of hot air fluff.

I think the first real DIY gatherings were Ti, Ron (Amphead) and others for the Krmathis b22 build, which was taken to Burning Amp.

Ah! The quiet approach. I've been purposely drumming up attention trying to get people together instead of just talking about it. Also trying to come up with ideas to help make it happen. Like putting together a portable lab to bring to meets.

DMM, oscilloscope, function generator, low noise oscillator, frequency counter. The empty slot is for a power supply. Must've got outbid at least 10 times for that thing.

What useful audio project can someone with no experience finish at a single meet? Cables, for sure. I'm not so confident a cmoy can be finished and cased at a single meet. A classroom situation seems a little ambitious for now.

Yes, I was at last year's Burning Amp Festival and it was very, very cool. It's not headphone-specific but you get a very diverse crowd into all things related to audio DIY. It is a very international affair with some big names in attendance (e.g., Nelson Pass, Siegfried Linkwitz, John Curl, etc.,). Yet the atmosphere is really low key and friendly. I would highly recommend BAF to anyone.

Alex Cavalli and I even got honorable mentions in UK's Hi-Fi News magazine...

I think a cmoy and mini3 can be done in one sitting 3-5 hours? However; it will depend on the person's familiarity with soldering and tools; the casing will have to be provided or taken home to mess with. A rigid course outline by 15-30 min intervals to 1 hour milestones and bunch of helpers, I think students can complete a cmoy. In a class setting people can move fast given the each task has to be completed 15-30 mins.

A quick cable class would be awesome too, have a roll of some silver/occ wire and cut to length! and it can have bunch of ends for mini to 1/4 or even senn connectors and balanced ends.

Regardless of the meets, I'd love to see some burning amps! Someone should start a thread with pictures of their amps on fire.

In all seriousness, meets sound great. If anyone puts one together in LA let me know.
