With something like the DT 770 M, it isolates so well (and it's closed too) you can't hear yourself at all and you end up singing very poorly. The problem with semi-open and open headphones for recording is that some of the music leaks through and is recorded by the mic. The best solution is to get closed headphones and play the song through it plus what the mic is recording at the same time. Large amounts of reverb are added (only in the headphones, not the final track) to the track that the headphones play because it often helps people become mroe confident and sing better. So to answer your question, yes any good semi-open or open headphones will be better for singing than closed ones.

I have a studio recording tomorrow and am still a little uncomfortable with headphones.
I too sing at my best when I can hear only myself and nothing else. Headphones still create a hands over my ears effect and tend to give me the impression that I are singing too loud. This sometimes makes me loose dynamic control and sound a little flat.
Any suggestions as to what volume to play the phones at?
