Singing with headphones?

will any open headphones be good for singing along with or are some better then others? I do not have any open headphones and was just bored and wondering about this.

I love to sing, and was just thinking how annoying it is not to be able to hear...

thanks.

I do some vocals recording at home, so I have noticed a few things with headphones. As you've probably realised, you sing much better when you can hear yourself. Even semi-open headphones like the AKG K 530s you can hear yourself quite clearly whilst still hearing the music well. With something like the DT 770 M, it isolates so well (and it's closed too) you can't hear yourself at all and you end up singing very poorly. The problem with semi-open and open headphones for recording is that some of the music leaks through and is recorded by the mic. The best solution is to get closed headphones and play the song through it plus what the mic is recording at the same time. Large amounts of reverb are added (only in the headphones, not the final track) to the track that the headphones play because it often helps people become mroe confident and sing better. So to answer your question, yes any good semi-open or open headphones will be better for singing than closed ones.

I have a studio recording tomorrow and am still a little uncomfortable with headphones.

I too sing at my best when I can hear only myself and nothing else. Headphones still create a hands over my ears effect and tend to give me the impression that I are singing too loud. This sometimes makes me loose dynamic control and sound a little flat.

Any suggestions as to what volume to play the phones at?

Ask for some semi-open headphones like the AKG 240, they'll probably have them around for exactly the reason you dislike singing with closed phones.

Alternately, they can feed some of you into your closed phones, and it will sound like open phones to you, more or less.

If you are going to use them in public, open cans are better, so that other people can hear the music as well as your song.

My wife laughs hystericaly at me if I sing along to music I'm listening to.
