Introducing myself + my DIY starter gear - Page 2

Hey I put together my first cmoy last night. I'm happy how it turned out, but I now have a different idea of which tools are more useful than others.

- First of all, I need a better tip for my wes51. I think a smaller one will help a lot.
- I find my tweezers very, very helpful!
- The panavize by itself is not that useful when you are soldering wires, because it only holds 1 item. Helping hands might be better in this case, however I find the vise quite stable.
- I thought I had cutters....
- I thought I had cable stripper...
- Most importantly, I thought I had a DMM!!! This thing that I have was really bad. Even tough I was able to use it to measure dc voltage on left and right channels, resistance was a different story. Actually my cheap (analog?) meter was better at resistance than the digital. As a result: -$120 for fluke dmm from ebay (I've updated the lists in my original post).
- I need more colors of the same gauge wire!

I have filmed almost the entire process, so I'll probably spend the evening editing and maybe have something later today to show you all so you can laugh a bit before bed

Regarding the cmoy, the current is drifting when I connect headphones, there is a slight hiss (added 100Ohm R5, but still there) that disappears when I touch something on the board. So it sounds like grounding issue, but can't figure out what I did wrong. I hope you can help when I post the pics.

So the most important thing I need to get now is wire cutters!!! Mine failed me miserably and I was trimming the resistors with my multitool scissors.

That is so true, and is a great acid test of both you and your tool kit.

Your findings about the meter are also very real. A cheap analog is often better than a cheap DMM. It's good to have both types, in as good a quality as is practical.

Georgi- nice start you have going there. And it's good to try to keep those bits well organized right off the bat. You might be surprised how quickly it can get away from you. Before you know it you can be swimming in tiny bags of parts... can't see the trees for the forest!

Here are a few snapshots:
Current portable setup (cMoy + iPod gen2 + fresh, fresh from the oven interconnect):

Then, the cMoy in a standard altoids case with a bit different positioning of the components:

This is what it looks like open. Notice the board is upside down, because I mounted the jacks on it and if I didn't put it upside down, I had to drill the lid as well for the in/out connections:

close-up:

I'm still working on the several hours of video that I shot while making just the board (I didn't film the case this time, but I will next time).

Thanks all for all the help.

P.S. Fluke 87-III is now in the mail. I got it for $110 bucks, hopefully it works
