e-mu 1212m and Windows 7

I’ve been using different builds of Windows 7 for quite some time, but when I acquired an e-mu 1212m a few months ago I had to go back to Vista because of a few problems. ASIO worked fine, but for instance while watching movies the sound got a distorted after a while. Restarting the program solved the problem, but it became quite a hassle doing that all the time.

A week ago I tried 7 again(build 7100 RC) to see if anything had changed, and at first glance e-mu 1212m now worked perfect. No distortions. However, a new problem now appeared. After I used an audio app using ASIO, I got an error trying to play video files. I solved this by changing the windows sound settings to 16 bit 44100Hz. Unfortunately that only solved the problem with xvid files, whenever I try to play .mkv HD files (.wmv HD files works, for some reason) I don’t get any sound. I use CCCP so codecs shouldn’t be the problem, I use the same package in Vista and everything works fine there. I tried to make MPC down sample the sound to 44100Hz, but that didn’t work. Any ideas?

I know it’s probably a driver issue and there are no official 1212m drivers for Windows 7 yet, but I was hoping there was a workaround. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Change sample rate to 48khz.

You are such a brave man that you try to use a Creative product (with Creative drivers) on an OS that is not stable. Wow.
Seriously. Creative are known for their terribad drivers. Maybe not what you want to hear but I would stick with Vista for a while.

Don't think its a creative driver issue i believe its using WASAPI as it was designed for vista.
Firstly i would disable onboard audio controllers as this might give conflicts with your hardware.
Try using Kernel streaming via foobar as that works fine for me, i gave up using ASIO as personally i think either KS or WASAPI sounds much better with less distortion, true bit perfect playback!
Reguarding the no sound were you using foobar at the time? because WASAPI / KS mutes all other sounds when being used in exclusive mode, try taking it off exclusive mode via the sound device properties.

EMU has had very stable drivers for years contrary to claims here. I have used 1212M for years to feed an external DAC, and archive vinyl. I have Windows 7 x86 on a Lenovo x61 tablet, and WIndows 7 RC1 x64 on my HTPC/hi-fi, both are light years ahead of Vista in terms of performance and stability.

Open FFDSHOW in the CCCP folder in Start menu; you may need to turn on Resample as maybe some of your HD material has higher sample rates. J. River has a fully customizable DirectShow filter section.

As EMU Patchmix sessions do not switch sample rates on the fly, I used 96kHz as the default for everything on my system as I had native 96kHz material. Thus, J. River or FFDSHOW upsampled anything not native to 96kHz, film or audio.

I had some problems with windows 7 as well. when i was running w7 in 32 bit ii had absolutely no problems at all on my sony vaio vgnz series laptop. When i installed the 64bit version on w7 the problems began. blue screen errors ,computer not booting with card in and not being able to record from the analog inputs in the patchbay the card drivers work properly but it seems to me like the patchbay only works when it feels like it. i had it working for about a month and just this week it stopped. Emu really needs to
updade the drivers for w7 this is really disturbing my workflow in the studio.

I have been using windows 7 for over a month now with the emu1616m system. what drivers did you use? i use the drivers for vista on windows 7
i do remember getting directions from emu to turn power the dsp box off and on when installing the drivers it worked fine for a months even at higher settings and just yesterday stopped allowing my to record from the ANALOG INPUTS. I WISH EMU WOULD JUST RELEASE SOLID DRIVERS ALREADY

Seems more like something else in your system is not playing nice with the soundcard. I'm using the 1212m in Windows 7 and have ZERO issues. Driver is the latest available (v2.1, which came out late in 2008).

Hi.. I know this discussion is alittle old, but I'm hoping someone is still around to help.

 

I just upgraded to a Win -7 64 bit machine from WinXP

 

I have a EMU 1212m installed.. Works fine everywhere except in SONAR 8.0

I can't get any sound outta my VST's or Virtual Instruments...  Example... Zt3a or Rapture..  I have Patchmix dsp running.. have the latest driver for it.. Fruityloops 9.0 works okay in stand alone mode...but in Plug-in mode ... it has same issue. Switched audio to ASIO..no help... switched outputs to the cooresponding instrument.. no help.. tried disabling onboard sound and checked EMU . anyone know any suggestions??

As always in Win 7 you need to make sure Windows sound config samplerate (Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Manage audio devices > [Select your output] > Properties > Advanced) matches that of the locked samplerate in the PatchMix DSP application as the card won't switch just because Windows does.

Tip: If sound suddenly dies entirely, change this setting and then change it back again. Windows might say something about device already in use, ignore it and go ahead anyhow. Sound will come back once the device is re-initialized.

 

As for the distorted sound that might occur every once in a while this clearly has something to do with Windows sound buffers not being filled fast enough, or not being sent to the card fast enough causing some kind of "buffer-skew". Better drivers are indeed needed, or some way of providing higher priority to the sound buffering and transfer mechanism.
