Westone UM3X Appreciation Thread - Page 269

Regarding custom tips with UM3X....FYI

I have them and still prefer the star tips.  Not sure if it is the type of resin but they just don't stay on and I have heard other members say the same.  Even when on, I like the sound with star tips better.

UM3X nozzle also does NOT go flush up to the housing.  There is a funnel flange in between which adds to the bad fit of UM56.  Just saying...

But I couldn't be happier with the star tips.  Using the ones with no color designation.  Treble come through perfectly and bass is equal to using complys.

I will get those tips then. Time to take my um3x to the next level!

Well regarding tips, I tried the included long Comply's, and i noticed no difference in treble. I got a better seal and seemed as if the sound became more refined. I think it has something to do with ear shapes when it comes to foam soaking up treble, because i sense NO difference. And after clipping the ends until the core, i hear more detail. Im thinking its the overall better seal, because in some of my DnB songs, i hear better depth.

FYI....

With the new Westone "Star" tips, UM3X is among the best universal IEM I have ever heard.  My favorite was W3 for several years but the new tips add a more open airiness with UM3X.  With all previous supplied tips, they all seem to make UM3X sort of "closed in" sounding.  With the "Star" tips I find it sensational.

I am new to this form , anyway I just went from having shure se425 for 5 years .... I had the 400 early model for 3 years ..... And I just got a pair of westone um3x rc .. I gotta tell ya I am floored by the sound differance ! I've been relistening to all my music non stop to hear what I've been missing all theses years!. It almost brings a tear to my eyes .
The sound stage and seperation is fantastic . Highs are so actuate u can hear the different size symples . . Also I kinda like the foam buds they supply . They are lighter so there is less pressure on the ear canal . May not sound like much but if u wear them for up to 12 hours 4 days a week ... Believe me u do notice the difference . Also the thin light cord makes way less noise especially on cold days when the cord gets more ridged . I just don't like though how it looks so cheap ,I just hope it's as ruff as they say it is . Between the light cord and the light densitie of the foram there is hardly and "in your head " noise . A lot less then the shure hands down . Anyway just my 2centa

Do any of you drive the W3 or UM3X straight out of your source? Or you all still use an amp?

I use them right out of my iphone;

I do notice they have some more energy when using an amp though.  For me, it's not worth carrying one around for the marginal increase in performance.

The Nexus S does a surprisingly good job of driving the UM3X without a portable amp, as well as the rockboxed Sansa Clip+. However for desktop/laptop purposes I've found 99% of onboard sound solutions to be lacking when in comes to driving the UM3X unamped. With something even as small as the FiiO E10 dac/amp, these come alive though. The soundstage seems to be more defined when they're amped nicely and given a good source. I don't have an ipod myself but I would imagine that models with good dacs and op-amps should be just fine.

Relative to many other IEM's they are both VERY efficient and don't improve all that much with an amp.  Very slight difference to my ears.

Hello,

I am looking for some advice here. What would be the best way to "brighten" / "bring the sound forward" for the Westone UM3X? I really do love the UM3X but find that my ears prefer a brighter sound for my work applications. Any ideas? As a reference to sound signature, I previously used the Sennheiser HD 25-1 which seems to have more highs and mids. Not sure if this is a fair comparison since they are headphones. Any help would be appreciated, thank you for your time!

You can use different tips or you can change the amplification. Both are legit ways to slightly modify the sound. You can also purchase the new star tips found on the Westone website. I use the standard medium mushroom tips from the older generation model. It sounds very forward like you are describing. Good Luck Buddy.

I'm liking lately the small Comply-P foams. They improve the highs while keeping the triple flanges bass. That's when the foam is properly squeezed if you don't get it right the foam will protrude the nozzle bore harming the highs.

??

Use a bit of treble EQ.
