I'm sure some of you know that I don't particularly like the K701 due to it's "dry" sound (or rather lean sound), but as of late my opinions have changed. When I previously heard the K701, it was through my friends "Little-Dot MKII", and it didn't sound all that great to me. The LD just didn't seem to synergize all that well and sounded somewhat weird. I decided to try it out of my HK400 amp and it sounded kinda lean to me.
This was months ago and I thought I'd give them a second chance. I played them through my Fischer amp and whoah! It sounded much, much better than it did through his amp. More focussed and alive, and I liked the added warmth from the tubes. Then I got an itching and plugged it into my Sansui Integrated amp. Now since the amp is SS it will sound far more neutral/analytical. Once again I was bowled over. The Fisher had a rated power of 16 watts (I think, but was missing stickers with power rating) and the Sansui was rated at 105watts (both into 8ohms). The Sansui seemed to power them better, but the Fischer had a much more full sound in comparison.
(On both amps, I'm using the L/R speaker outs for my headphones. This was achieved by making a 1/4" to bare wire adapter. So it goes from the 1/4" input out to four wires. I did this cause I know I would be getting more power from the speaker outs than the headphone out. I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't advise this though.)
I know my K601 sounds different than the K701, but now I prefer the K701's airiness and resolving power. Plus I love the sound of the mids on these. They sound so clean and detailed.
So now I find myself wanting a K701/K702 and thought I'd drive out to Music Direct and pick them up. So I'm going to go this coming weekend and take another plunge on more unnessecary headphones, but all be it that I said the HD600 would be my last purchase and that was over a year ago. Now I have 22 pairs of headphones and so much gear. Damn it all Head-fi! If only I wasn't bit by the Audiophile bug!
I'll update you all once I purchase them Saturday.
So any recommendations for amps with better synergy ($200-$400)? I know these will need a lot of break in time as I have heard stories of 2000 plus hours.
