MHDT Havana vs. Stello DA100 - $1000.00(ish) DAC Showdown! - Page 4

Hmmm I think that the opinion of the op is a bit biased. Having heard both dacs in my system, I agree with many of his comments. But we are comparing an oversampling DAC here with a non oversampling tube one. He also used a solid state amplifier for the comparison. My personal opinion is that Havana is more colored than Stello. It has this warm sound that most of the tube DACS have, which is very pleasant with a solid state equipment, but some times becomes overkill with tube one. Stello is a much more forward sounding chap and it shines in an all tube setup... Havana on the other hand is very sweet. Its no opamp and tube output probably make it a great choice in overall solid state systems . I don't know if it is a matter of price, or design, but I would be thrilled some time (I'm already saving money) to try a zanden 5000 and find if at this price range, NOS dacs share the same sound characteristics with the entry level ones!

I agree on the tube selection of the 195x WE 2c51 non JW brand. Spanks the Bendix 195x 2c51.

I would sell everything in my sig today and not miss much, the havana you would have to pry from dead fingers.

How would this compared to a modded PS audio digital link 3? it's actually just a tad over 1000 new if you try to get a deal from cullens. I tried getting the stage three one for 1k+ shipping and one of the audiogon dealers agreed to it. I'm guessing the PS audio is a league above these two?

guessing?.....
Well...head-fi and an audiophile community is not about guessing at all.
Trust your own years thats all, we all guess but you cannot compare them if you do not hear them.
As for me, after hearing a Havana next week buyed a new one and will never sold or change it, you need to hear it with a Cryoed WE396A

@ironeisnna:

Yes ... I'm a little biased (re review findings) but mostly because, as you most rightly claimed ... the review was done with a SS amp. Otherwise ... I think all of your comments were fantastic and on point. Thanks.

But that said ...

I have a good local head-fi pal who uses a Paradisea+ with a Woo 6SE and swears by it. (and that MHDT DAC is not quite as refined and detailed as the Havana).

I, as well, have been using my Havana with a Ray Sam Raptor and nearly tried to hump it the other night.

But then again, the Raptor (as per my preference) is not the most tubey sounding of amps ... though it can be made to sound so with the right tubes; I dig the semi SS/tube hybrid sound of the Raptor. And the Havana is just downright dreamy with it.

You'd have to pry mine from me as well.

And since your in Htown. Let me know if you want to borrow my JW branded WE396A ... I find it much better than the non JW branded.

And BTW: so glad your happy with your decision to upgrade!

Best.

I need a portable havana + discrete amp mushed into a little box - that would make me happy.
