Custom Triple.fi 10 Pro & Custom Shure SE530 - Page 21

Null Audio sends them to UM. I do not know about the extra driver, I am sorry. Mine only have 3 drivers from the TF10. Still working up a review.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

I got another question? What cable do you guys recommend? I can't imagine keeping the stock cable. I've read so many conflicting opinions, I'm not sure which to choose. UE Custom cable, Westone ES, Null Audio... so many choices. Thanks.
and btw, what are the choices of cable available at the UM website and how good are they compared to the original tf 10 pro cable?

Um uses the Ultimate Ears Custom Cable. So it's the braided one, and not the calbe you get with the TF10 PRO. It's similar to the Westone Es and the Cables that Null Audio makes.

Sorry if this has been asked before. But i'm using a mobile phone and it would be too slow to read every page of this thread.

Has anyone tried this custom reshelling on a um3x? Does it make it like a es3x then? Since they probably use the same drivers, crossover and all.

If there are impressions can someone link me to it please?

Thanks alot

The UM3X and the ES3X, share the same driver and the same crossover point (Not the same crossover). If you get the Um3X custom molded by UM, it will not sound the same as the ES3X cause of the wiring, filters etc..

UM sent me a list of cables, which included the UE11 custom cable, Westone custom... then some others I'm guessing are of UM's own design: Purple Storm, Pastoral, Vienna and Weiguang. There are no details given for any of their cables, only price. I haven't the slightest idea which cable to choose. I've read the custom UE cable is a bad choice for the Triple.fis, but if I'm having a driver added, I'm not sure I would have the same results using the UE11 cable.

This is a question I've been wondering about for some time. Could you elaborate a little bit on the difference with the wiring/filters? It's been hard to get specific technical information about the differences...

I noticed someone mentioned earlier that the customized triple.fi doesn't have a circuit board for the cross-over, whereas JH's and the ES3X does.

Right now, I'm leaning more towards trying to find a used triple.fi for around $200 and getting that re-molded. I'm a little unsure whether it would be better than the JH5, though.

The drivers will be the same, the crossover will be very similar. So on that part, the sound should not be audibly noticeable if both were in custom shells. However, the filters in the sound bore is where they differ, UM uses and different filter than Westone because of that the sound coming from the monitor will have a different sound. i'm not sure what the difference is, but there definitely will be.

The Triple Fi 10 doesn't have a circuit board as a crossover because UE likes using cheap capacitors as sort of "crossovers". They limit the signal going to the driver (for example, the capacitor limits the signal for lows, then the driver becomes a tweeter), instead of actually splitting the frequency like JH and Westone do. It works well, but because it limits the signal it also affects the other frequencies quality.

Can't answer the Custom TF10 vs JH5 PRO question. but the JH5 was meant to be up against the UE5 and was suppose to be priced at $699 instead of the current $399. So...you take the choice.

I've spent a few days with the triple fi with the additional mid driver and there are some pluses as well as the minuses. I've mainly used them unamped with the Zune or the Iriver E10. I plan to get the Amp3 soon.

Good/bad thing is that these are very rich and thick sounding phones. They sound (much) better than the how I remember my TF10s or the recabled Shure 530s I own now, but I really can't use these for background listening while doing work. The isolation is off the charts - much better than my custom tips for the 530s. I'm not sure if this is a good thing either.

One of the complaints that I have are that the size of the headphones are quite bigger than what I was expecting. They stick out a bit (I'll provide photos later) and I'm not sure if I really want to wear these in public outside of the school library or something.

But for focused listening, they sound very, very good - much better than any IEMs I've owned in the past. The details are amazing & the highs and the bass is nearly perfect for me. The bass is very tight and the highs are very prominent but not overwhelming, which is very important to me as it still lets me hear all the vocals.

If there was something I had to complain, it's that with the Purple Storm cable, the quantity of the bass is a bit overwhelming for me. With the Pastoral, the separation isn't as clear for me. Jena sounds the best out of the three, but as stated earlier, it's impractical for portable uses. Also, even with the Jena cable, I think the separation could be better and that the mids could be a bit clearer. I say this with a hesitation because I have not heard or owned any headphones that are better than these, but something in the back of my head tells me that there are definitely rooms for improvement. Still, I feel that these headphones are definitely worth the ~400 dollars I've spent and it's a pity that I'll never be able to compare these to other sub-500 customs out there.

I use UE custom cable on one of my (un-customed) Triple.Fi -sounds superb! Have Null Lune on my other pair.

Great sense of almost 3D imaging & soundstage on some recordings (trance stuff, for example, shines with this setup). The pins don't fit flush as stock but of course this wouldn't be a problem if you have them re-shelled. I have 2 UE cables - old custom, thick & wrapped, great sound; and new, braided, silver -much lighter & as flexible as Westone but tbh don't know if it has the edge in SQ over the old....so far I prefer the UE custom cable over the Lune, but need to do more comparing (kind of ignored the Lune after I got the UE).

Does anyone else have any issues with the size of the buds? I'm gonna get my impressions soon for my remold and would love to know if this is a common complaint with the UMs.

Secondly, I would love to see pics YoungLee.

what do you mean? As far as customs, they are made from impressions of your ear. Usually they are a perfect fit, there are sometimes when Manufacturers smooth the canal part a bit too much and some find it too loose. But that happens to all manufacturers, if you're wondering about this problem. Don't worry about it, there's a risk for ever manufacturer.

There's a new Lune Series coming out, with new material, new conductors, and a whole new design. Getting my hands on those when they arrive.
