I don't care what potheads say, weed is addictive. After being a chronic (meaning heavy) smoker for nearly two years, I went through withdrawls like mad. Crabby...damn was I crabby. But hey, it's been a couple of weeks and I'm doing quite well. Smoked a couple of times since quitting, but didn't enjoy it all that much. Made me really tired. I think it has the same problems that cigarettes have...what to do when not smoking.

One good thing though, I think I'm losing weight (WOOHOO!!!)

Well, could it be that pot is psychologically (not physiologically) addictive? Psychologically as in you liked the effects and had incorporated them into your day-to-day life, so when you quit...

Well, I'm not a scientist, but it could be just psychological. And it hasn't been as bad as the cigarettes were ( I quit back in 96'). But there is some form of addiction.

I hate it when the pot smoking public says a bunch of BS about weed not being addictive or bad for you. IT IS!!! It might not be as bad as cigarettes, but it's not harmless.

The fact is that when you put any sort of smoke into your lungs it is harmful to them. After all, most people, even smokers cough when they take a puff of weed. It is just because (most) people need to smoke much less weed than they do cigarettes to get the desired effect. Plus, it is true that nicotine is more addictive than most other things out there, but that does not weed is not. I tend to agree with Eric that it is probably pretty pyschologically addictive. I have seen too many potheads in my life to suggest otherwise.

I also agree with mc whak that is a load of ******** that pot is harmless. It is not like PCP or heroin or anything like that, but pot kills people's judgement, making them more prone to doing stupid and/or dangerous ****. Ever see anyone drive stoned? It is not pretty...it may be slow, but it is not too precise. Furthermore, anyone who has ever felt burnt or talked to a burnt person will know how stupid they are. Being unable to answer simple questions without several seconds thought...it is not a particularly endearing trait. So why destroy your brain? What else is there without it?

I don't want to offend anyone, but people should realize what a stupid lifestyle choice it is. That won't prevent some people from doing it though.I am not trying to take some moral high road, I am just speaking from experience and personal opinion.
After all, smoking is arguably as stupid, and I was among the people doing that. It took realizing how crappy it made me feel, and how it was not-so-slowly killing me to make me stop.

Heh, the first time I saw Neil's Dapper Dan pic I started laughing thinking about O Brother Where Art Thou? Get it, it's a great movie.

On pot: I agree almost entirely with Stuart and Eric. You don't need to smoke as much weed to get the desired effect and therefore you will most likely not get as addicted. I also believe that weed is no where near as addictive as nicotine. I do believe that pot is harmful, and that any product you smoke is harmful, but smoking cigarettes in my mind is just plain dumb. I just don't see a reason to even start smoking cigarettes for that matter. Also, I know some people who are potheads too, but in my high school, there are a large number of kids that smoke pot. Most of them do not do it regularly, are not addicted, and have pretty good grades. Even some of the brightest kids in our school do it. However, there are very few kids who smoke cigarettes now. Whether this is a good or bad trend, I don't know. Again, I'm not trying to defend smoking pot, just giving my opinion on the matter.

Yeah, I was sort of pissy when I was writing that post. My landlady was giving me ****. I had to bust a (figurative) cap in her ass. Anyway, yes, I agree. Some of the people who I know who smoke pot are really talented or smart people, but it is really funny, as whenever they do it, they turn in to such boring, stupid people. Even the next day, the whole burnt aspect comes into play. I just find drug use in general so banal. It is the apex of mediocrity. It is so often done (at least at first) for the desire to conform to the expectations of others. Only after one first submits to the peer pressure does the addiction start. I don't like to overuse quotes, as it tends to hide an inability to articulate oneself, but Nabokov illustrates the phenomenon with the well-honed scythe of his wit: "Drug addicts, especially young ones, are conformists flocking together in sticky groups...nothing dates quicker than radical youth, nor is there anything more Philistine, more bourgeois, more ovine than this business of drug duncery." Damn, I would not want to get on his bad side. That said, I know a great many people that are very good, intelligent, non-conformist people who smoke pot, but it seems so senseless to me. Ok, flame away.

Its all in your head bro. D9TCH is definitly not physically addicitve. Pyschologically, most likely, depending on the individual. Ive gone through cycles of smoking everyday, 5 - 10 times a day to not smoking at all for a week or more (got my reasons). The first time it was hell. Probably because it wasnt my choice (first week at a new school and I didnt know how hardcore they would be about searching bags/rooms so I didnt wanna chance it) and I was constantly thinking about it. Its all I would think about. All day. I even think I had dreams about it. When you dont think about it it isnt so bad. Anyway after that first tree smoking hiatius its really easy for me to stop for a little but if im not gettin high any more. I once went for a couple weeks straight without smoking, just didnt feel like it. And I didnt crave it once. Well maybe a couple times, but I could just think about something else and forget it. So I think your "withdrawls" are in your head. You think you need to get blazed for them to go away. You really dont. You just gotta stop thinkin you do.

As others have said, of course its not good for you. Youre smoking it. Unless of course you hit the vaporizor. OMG those things smells good after you fire some up. Its all tropical and fruity and yummy. It doesnt smell like smoke at all. You know how really dank trees sometimes got that fruity smell? Well it like that x1000. Mmmm mmmm good. Damn I wish I had one right about now.

Dont agree with the driving thing. Agree with the burnt thing to a point. I hate being burnt. Unless of course im tryna get my sleep on. But I dont think im that much more stupid.

Most definitly agree here. Id say out of my school of 3000, 1000+ smoke once in a while, some arent so bright, some are very bright. Just like with anything. At the school I went to last year not many people blazed. Out of my grade there were 4 regular tokers including me. Took the PSATs blazed as hell, well blazed for the first part kinda burnt for the second and third, but I scored the highest out of everyone. So Id have to say smoking trees does not make you stupid.

Hehe yea, depending on the strain. You ever notice some buds just get you all munchified and you eat everything in site, then other buds dont really make you hungry but if you do eat you really pay attention to the all wonderful tastes of whatever your eating. It makes good food that much better. I dont really like the super munchified buds. Those tend to be the ones that burn you out too. Silly Indica dominant strains.

Dont dont agree here at all (the high = stupid/boring part). I have a feeling whatever I say isnt going to change your oppinion. So im not gonna bother . I think your friends have been smokin the schwag though. Find some of the kind and maybe your perception will change. I know of a few artists, musicians, philosophers, inventors, and generally creative people who would probably not agree with you either.

I guess ive seen this happen. But it cracks me up that you try to link "the desire to conform to the expectations of others" to drug usage. Of course it happens sometimes. But ive seen this behavior thousands of times more among non-drug users. And the worst part is most of them cant even realize it. :sigh: I also dont like this "drug" word. It tends to have a negative connotation. It makes me feel funny to say it. But anyway we may be talking about completely different kinds of drugs and completely different kinds of people. Everyone uses drugs for different reasons, some of theses reasons are idiotic and self destroying, some of these reasons I beleive to be among the most beautiful and pure thoughts ever conceived.

Pot is essentially a selfish drug - it's a whole lot of fun as long as you're the one smoking it. If you're straight and you're around someone who's smoking, they get very boring very quickly. On the other hand, alcohol is a more social drug. This says nothing about the relative addictive or harmful qualities of either drug.

You might like to read "The Botany of Desire (A Plant's-Eye View of the World)" by Michael Polan. It has a chapter about marijuana, the book is a study of how we influence plants and our history with them. Other chapters consider the apple, the tulip and the potato. I heard him on NPR one morning, a very interesting speaker.

Ever been to Copenhagen? There is a section of the city named Christiania, a leftover from the 60's when squatters occupied an abandoned military barracks. There is a street with about 16-20 small shacks, selling pot. They all have slabs of hashish of various kinds on display as well as buds and other paraphenalia - each has at least a kilogram on display - funny how we hear about Amsterdam but not Copenhagen. I was only there for a felafel (true, and it was good!) - an amazing sight. Apparently the police ignore the place as long as there is no trouble.
