I am pretty sure Kingwa was quoted as saying the DAC in the Compass was 50% of the DAC-3SE (which is 3.5x the price) and the Amp is 80% the quality of the C2C.

still, they aren't real music performance/air vibrations

He said it was 50% of the DAC-19SE.

Just got a response from Kingwa: "I think Compass has 50% level of DAC19MK3."
Which makes sense as the DAC19MK3 is 2X as much $ as the Compass. Anybody have an idea when the "promo price" will end on this dac, and what it might jump to?

Promotional price ends 30 June - not sure what the new price might be.

The reference 1 went from $1390 USD to 1550, which is a 11.5% increase. I think the dac19mk3 will follow something similar, while the compass will have a much bigger jump since it is being sold at a double promo price hehe.

Just sent in my inquiry about this dac could be on the cards! As i cant find any other viable dac within the price range that has the similar sort of connectability options. Plus im sure it's going to go up another $50+ after the introductory offer.

Just put in my order for one Couldnt justify buying any of the bigger one's as i would need to upgrade alot of things to suit. Hmmm i hope i made the right choice!

What do you guys think of the "monitor-like" sound description? I'm a little afraid I'll get knocked into a coma using dac19+very uncharming ultrasone pro 900. These boring headphones is why I get my kicks from comparing different asio's and media players. Yes, sad, headphones decide how I listen to music.

If you're looking to "color" your sound, maybe the Compass with difference HDAM's is the answer. He says monitor because his higher end DAC's don't color the sound any (add to or take away from specific frequencies). I can't imagine better sound than I get from the Ref-1.

I hope it has good synergy with my Pro 900 because neutral is what sounds good on it. I get a slight rush every time I stick lm49860 into the compass because of its neutrality but it wears off quickly because of its inferiority to the hdam's. But what worries me is this description: "It does not produce charming sound but offers near real sound and less coloration." If my headphones become much mroe unengaging it's going to be like the closest thing to subliminal headphones.

If the sound of the Reference One (basically a pimped-up DAC-19 ) is anything to go by, be prepared for something really neutral. Even the Earth in the Compass is very noticeably coloured (warm), particularly in the mids and higs, compared to the Ref One. I'm afraid I wouldn't call the sound engaging at all. Musical, yes, engaging, no. Because for me an engaging sound is strongly related to colouration (and to a lesser extent to PRaT). It works for me, because I can let the headphones do the colouring (or not, in the case of the DT48).

I hope it works out with the Ultrasones. You seem to be suffering from a love-hate relationship there. (Not that that's an unusual thing.)

Mine is being shipped in a day or so Should be here in a week or more! Cant wait to compare it to my current DAC

I think we're used to "neutral" meaning flat EQ. The neutral we're talking about here is "just the music" without colouration.
