If the sound of the Reference One (basically a pimped-up DAC-19

) is anything to go by, be prepared for something really neutral. Even the Earth in the Compass is very noticeably coloured (warm), particularly in the mids and higs, compared to the Ref One. I'm afraid I wouldn't call the sound engaging at all. Musical, yes, engaging, no. Because for me an engaging sound is strongly related to colouration (and to a lesser extent to PRaT). It works for me, because I can let the headphones do the colouring (or not, in the case of the DT48).
I hope it works out with the Ultrasones. You seem to be suffering from a love-hate relationship there.

(Not that that's an unusual thing.)
