Going nuts trying to get Foobar to playback DTS

I'm using a Behringer UCA202 to transfer a digital signal via Toslink from my PC to my Meridian 561 surround processor. Repeatedly on this forum it's been stated that the UCA202 transfers bit-perfect digital audio over this link, and sure 'nuff the Meridian's display says it's receiving 44.1. But I can't get this setup to play DTS recordings, no matter what I try, and I don't understand why. I'm using Foobar 2000, latest stable version.

I've downloaded and installed Behringer's own ASIO driver, since I've understood (I think!) that without either ASIO or kernel streaming (or is it both?) the UCA202 won't pass a bit-perfect signal. But is that right? The more I read the more confused I get.

The Readme file that comes with Behringer's ASIO driver stresses that to get it to work one must always use the same USB output connector as was used when the driver was installed, and I've followed that guidance. (To play DS I just switch the USB cable to a different connector and use MPC as player).

Anyway, for DTS playback I've tried every combination of 'Output' settings that is offered by Foobar and none of them produces any sound but noise. Not only that but Foobar tends to crash part-way through setting-up. I wonder if someone who is successfully using this device - in conjunction with Foobar - to do much the same thing as I'm (unsuccessfully) trying to do would care to give me the benefit of their advice? How, exactly, is your 'Output' configured in Foobar? And what are your settings in Behringer's Asio2ks app - assuming you're using it (and if you're not, what are you using as 'ASIO virtual device' instead and how is that set up)?

1) get latest version of foobar if you haven't done so already
2) get this plug-in: http://acropolis.lokalen.org/wp-cont...nload.php?id=4 put it into your components folder
3) use standard DSP playback plugin: convert 5.1 to stereo
4) if you are trying to play dts encoded wav files, go into the settings of the dts plugin and enable 'support dts cd/wav'

edit: nevermind i misread your post . I overlooked the fact that you feed it to a Meridian 561 surround processor.

Anyway,
- I would certainly test with the Kernel Stream output, i think you have most chances with that one.
- have you tried a 48khz DTS file? Maybe it works better with that (not that it solved your current problem).

Thank you panda, I now have a real signal coming out of my speakers instead of a horrible noise! I presume it's having imported the dts.dll into Foobar that's done the trick.

However, I'm still not quite where I'm trying to get to and I wonder if you have any more sage advice to offer. The point is that I don't actually want to convert 5.1 to stereo 'downstairs', because if I do I don't get surround sound (instead, the sound for the two rears comes out of the two fronts).

So I tried without using the standard "convert 5.1 to stereo" plugin, and I can't get any sound from the rears at all (nor much from the centre!). I realise that this problem may have nothing to do with Foobar and everything to do with the way my 561 is set up. But, as I said, if you have any further advice I'd welcome it

i have no idea as i don't like surround sound. maybe start a new thread asking how to setup your sound card to playback in 5.1 channels using foobar?

If anyone still cares about this thread, the secret is to install an SPDIF passthrough plugin. located here:

Then to make it work, I heeded this warning:
"MSVCR100.DLL library is required. If the plugin can not be loaded install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package."
and installed the package from here:
