There's a known hack for this. I almost, almost did the same thing and have only been able to restrain myself because of the Apple netbook rumors. The word is Apple will release four new devices - two iPhones, a new Touch and maybe a new iPod or maybe something else altogether.

For some irresponsible and unfounded speculation, I think Apple is going to jump on the netbook.

You don't need a dedicated app store, just general knowlege to really get your netbook running well for multiple purposes.

You should go for an itouch if you're using it for purely commuting though, especially on public transportation. You don't want to be hauling a laptop in and out of a bag or sleeven when you may be in a crowded bus/rail. Really the smaller footprint comes in handy during public situations like that. I want an itouch for the very reason that I can't use my 1000he everywhere due to space constraints.

Couldn`t wait for something new from Apple, wanted something now. I`m a bit impatient person.
I`ve bought myself an Ipod touch 16 gb (the 32 gb was too expensive imo), mainly for above reasons. If I ever need more during my commute, I`ll buy a netbook. My shoulderbag is already filled with stuff, mainly food.....

Using it for 2 days now, really having genuine fun with the small thing.
Read some e-books using Stanza. Viewed a couple of Southpark Episodes.

Really enjoyed AC/DC.

Tnx for all the replies you guys.

I've been running an eeePc 701 (the machine that gave us this whole netbook craze) since its release...best money I spent in '07. Complements my desktop perfectly. If I were in your position, I'd go for a netbook -- probably Dell, since it's a good deal & it's got good service. A PDA like the iPhone/iPod Touch just can't compete.

I recently got an eeePC and I love it as a laptop I can just bring it around when I need internet and I am able to use word and powerpoint when I'm in a hurry to work on a project, not too slow either since I upgraded to 2gb ram, overall the netbook will meet more needs than a iPod touch

I bought a 32GB touch a couple of months ago. I wish I bought a netbook instead. Internet browsing is a pain on the touch, but it is great for movies, if you can be bothered to convert them. I can't be.

Yes; keep an eye on things over at AppleInsider | Apple Insider News and Analysis and Mac OS Rumors. They've been fairly accurate in the past and both are predicting a tablet. One rumored feature is that the tablet will also work as a phone. That could be a killer app.

I say wait for the Nvidia Ion netbooks to start coming out in June. Then wait for a review and nab one of those. Companies are say it should only be like a $50-100 premium over current netbooks, but you gain a much more graphical power. HD video playback support and playing current video games like COD 4 at 30 FPS (so they say). Like I said wait for a review of them and go from there.

I hadn't heard of these until your post. I would be curious as to what kind of impact this GPU would have on battery life. I get pretty darn close to 4 hours on the stock 4-cell battery on my Dell Mini and there are aftermarket 8-cell batteries available. Obviously, long battery life only makes a netbook more useful.

I made the same decision back in August, and I'm glad I went with a netbook. I bought the MSI Wind U100, and now that I look at it, I wonder how I would have survived with an Ipod Touch. In my opinion, the novelty touch screen gets old REALLY fast.

oh, and regarding netbook vs. ipod touch, i don't really understand why these are your options since they do not address the same needs. if you need a portable computer, then an ipod touch will not suffice at all. if you just need something ultraportable that will help with an occasional computing task, then the ipod might work. in that case you'd probably be better off just switching your cell to an iphone though. i love mine.

The iPhone fit my portable needs and lighten my load considerably.
