Two identical drivers both tuned differently.

The lower driver has it's own smaller enclosure.

This emphasises higher frequencies, while the upper driver emphasises lower frequencies.

The headband is in a rotten state, but the rest is almost perfect.

Now just bask in it's dark-brown plastic and aluminium trimmed excellence... which is basically all this headphone is good for.

Now that's pretty.

Now... I was able to fashion a simple adapter from a spare headphone cable. I plugged these into my trusty Dragonfly and they made noise... sort of. At such an incredibly low volume that I couldnt discern anything. After that failure I modified the adapter and connected it to my speaker taps. I got just enough volume to say a bit about it.

It seems to be bass-centric, oddly enough. Detailed, relatively flat presentation, not much for treble. My set appears to have a channel imbalance (though it might be the crappy converter) and I can see why it drives people crazy. Is it at all possible to fix a malfunctioning set?

It's an interesting headphone to say the least.

You need a proper energizer adaptor to fix all underlined. As with imbalance hard to tell until you get a matching adaptor fed off a sufficiently power/integrated amplifier.

I actually somewhat expected this. We'll see if/when an energizer shows up for cheap.

I got a whole lot of vintage gear to share with you guys now, including a Stanton Dynaphase Sixty (beautiful <3). Unfortunately I can't take any pictures just yet, I already had to take a huge set of photos for my classifieds and I couldn't possibly have brought any more headphones with me today.

Until then, here's a couple shots of the ATH-6 I promised. I've been really sick lately so I wasn't able to get around to posting them before.

And, I still have not revealed everything to you... muahahaaa.

Might be able to terminate the ends of that AT electret to a Stax SRD-4. How many pins are there?

This is actually exactly what I was planning on doing. I was gonna get a Stax 'tret cable and use that. It has 4 pins.

Sweet. How would you rank those orthos? They show up often enough and they've piqued my curiosity several times. Almost picked up one the other day.

Had a TDS-5 while ago, great sound when modded. Had a spare that I moved the drivers to the Wharfedale housing and that brought soundstage out a bit.

Man, BMF, I knew you had these but looking at them in picture I can only just say... wow cool.gif

That TDS-15 headband--if ever you can't reconnect the cups to those anymore, you might be able to do something fun with them on some IEM level.

Something à la YH5M

I modded the 5M's. The previous owner modded the 7's. I transplanted the TDS-15 to Takstar's. The rest are stock. I have not listened to the TDS-16 because they have to be re-terminated.

The TDS-7 has the best bass but the clamping force is a force to be reckoned with. The TDS-5M sounds the best over all. The TDS-15 has rolled off bass but better treble than the others. The TDS-15 transplant sounds really good. It's hard for me to rank them. Some are better than others with different music. I like them all. If I Had to pick one (today ;) it would be the TDS-5M.

That's a great idea, kalbee. You want to give it a go? I'll send the headband to you.

I heard that the TDS-16 was supposed to be stupidly fast, like better than Grados fast. That retermination might be a good idea.

Just for some clarity as i see the descriptions for the "16" used interchangeably, the TDS-16 you are referring to with that particular attribute is the more compact looking 40 ohm "тдс 16 "Эхо" H-16-40 Cмела "

The Echo TDS-16 that is made in Smela, these larger ones that BMF has posted pics of are the Kiev versions.  The two models do sound quite different actually.

I gotta do the re-termination so I can hear the Kiev 15's. I like the Suave Bola Good Looks of the Smela more than the Kiev's ho-hum appearance....searching for a set of Smelas.

Very helpful. Looks like the Kiev is the one up at the moment. Guess I have to wait for a Smela.
