Can't wait compare HD800 with my other phones...
I'm not sure how something can be more "refined" than the K-1000s. There is nothing rough or unrefined about them. I assume "different beast" was what was meant.

Make sure you post impressions when comparing to your phones. I'm not sure the HD800s are for me, but I still enjoy reading about them.

Comparisons to the K1000 are making me think that the HD800 might be up my alley. That and the comparisons to the HE60. I am excited to try them.

I like the OII but I am one of those people that prefers the forwardness of the HE60 to the laid back OII.

The R10's came out in '89???
A lot of thought and engineering went into the R10. The best headphone designs including HE90, R10, K1000 are all approaching 20 years. Not much has really changed in 20 years. Thats why there is so much excitement for the HD800.

Too bad they could't make any better after R-10....
The last year of production for the R10 was 2004.

Well, again, all of these infos are not so useful because they are not based on balanced HD800....

Well hopefully the HD800 inspires others (in addition to the Ed. 8 and ps1000s) to be just as innovative. Choice is good!

The information is extremely useful. A single-ended HD650 sounds very very similar to a balanced HD650, and they are certainly close enough to form an accurate impression as to the sound signtaure and quality regardless of whether it is being used balanced or not.

I completely agree with the monkey! LOL that didn't sound right... but I think way to much emphasis has been put on balanced at headfi.

The HD650 had the biggest change when going balanced, other phones were almost unnoticeable that I've tried. In the speaker world some components and speakers actually sound worse balanced.

The HD800 has nothing in common with the HD650 at all in it's design other than the company that makes it, so this assumption that the HD800 will scale when balanced is a stretch unless I missed someone posting about a comparison.

Not only that, but the HD650 balanced sounded... like HD650.

Just to be clear on this bluetooth A2DP: you do loose some quality with A2DP as it is as its a lossy codec used to retransmit your data as the bandwith is not big enought with bluetooth 2.x + EDR. The A2DP standard transmission codec called SBC is how ever very good at HQ setting - usually its the other parts in consumer products that are limiting.
How ever as I wrote else (look around my blog or something) with bluetooth 3.0 there is coming the raw speed to run it and a official supported codec for lossless transmission.

But sounds pretty cool...

Sounds like the HD800 is a winner! I am looking for the HE60 sound that can be used with a regular headamp and it sounds like this may do the trick.

I'll second this - I took some time to listen to the Apache hooked up only to my home source, and it made a significant difference in what I was hearing.

I wanted to get a good listen to it with some of my own gear, as I'm seriously considering the Apache as my next amp purchase. I liked what I heard.

More later...

elrod-tom, could you please elaborate more about the K-1000 vs HD800,which one do you like more?
it's hard for me to belive that a headphones could sound better than earspeakers.

Right now, I am seriously ANGRY.

Being the lovely piece of equipment that it is...

I woke up this morning to the sweet smell of burning plastic. The craptastic Zhaolu Headphone amp output had blown a resistor and over heated the rest of them. That, in turn, got to my CD1000's which were hooked up to it over night (I don't like using a tube amp or the beta for right before I go to sleep because of potential over heating). So, it not only destroyed itself because of course, it is hooked up to the output of the DAC chip.....it also killed the left driver of my CD1000!

If someone has a single CD3000 driver, I would be very appreictaive and could pay you for it.

Now, I am DAC-less and at-home-headphone less. Is there someone I can go after for this?

There was a time when I really liked my Zhaolu whioch was about 1 week ago. Now, I want to smash it to little pieces. Especially because it is like I have $800 to shell out on replacements.

So, right now I am analogue-phile and using my ESW9. It isn't so bad....just annoying.

Is just the headphone amp portion bad? If so, let me know, I have one of the basic (not the upgraded) headphone boards sitting at the shop collecting dust.

Oh, that really bites!

I am afraid to keep my gear even plugged in the wall (even if it is off) for fear of this sort of thing... call me paranoid but....
