My roughly 13-year-old PortaPro Jrs are probably uglier than most. The original pads disintegrated some time ago. The PP Jrs were just lying around, unused and unloved, until I replaced the comfies on my Grado SR60s with Senn 414 pads. I put the comfies on the PortaPros. Looks like hell but sounds good to me when I feel like more bass.
Are you speaking from experience here? Because I've had my Portapros for about 1.5 years and I've never had an issue with build despite not always treating them with the utmost care.
