If you decide that you prefer your recabled RS1i makes you want to sell your vintage pair, I'm interested.

At this point, it seems the wood box was cut from the package and it instead looked like this:

It's possible this box is rare because it was susceptible to crushing in shipment, there's literally nothing to protect the top of the cups aside from a thick card-stock.
My first RS-1's (purchased in 1999) came in box like this.

The first 'new type' cardboard box was this-

which appeared directly after 9/11 and came with this letter:-

ahh...that explains it. darn it. they should at least lower the price of the rs1 then...considering the box to be worth $75. well, i guess the extension cable and adapter makes up for it. but the box still would've been nice.

That letter is absolutely fascinating, and an amazing inclusion in that particular set. It looks like the cardboard box I have was the company that was put out of business... not the wooden box.

Note that it says "Outer Carton" in the letter. That certainly makes sense, considering mine are from late 98, early 99.

As for the price of the wood box vs. the price of the adapter/cable combo, I believe John told me that the initial price for the infamous Vintage A / Vintage S wood box was around $30, and that the cables were worth more than that so he thought it more than a fair trade.

I would also love the cable and adapter is that included in the RS1i? I can always buy the wooden box from Grado labs now. Has anyone done that?

It specifies to say which Grado the box is for when ordering. I would like one for my HF-1, HF-2, and future RS1i. Thanks!

Hi Mercuttio:

Thanks for the great article on the Grado RS1 product line. It really helped me with my purchase today of slightly used buttonless RS1 (not the i). All I can say is WOW! The shrillness that my SR325is' give sometimes is now gone!

Just phenomenal headphones.

Thanks again!

You can buy them from any Grado Dealer

You can buy them from any Grado dealer. If you're in Canada, I can recommend: STEREOTYPE AUDIO. I picked up the 1/4" to 1/8" adapter, headphone extension cable, and large bowl pads from them. They were literally delivered the next day.

If you're in the US, check out Amazon.com. They are there too.

TTVJ is also a good place to buy extra parts, and he's a sponsor of this board so it's nice to give back by purchasing from him. Good prices, and he's the one and only source of the legendary Grado Flats...

And if you have an RS1, you NEED Grado Flats. Even just to try.

What about the new boxes? Anyone have pictures?

The newest boxes are seemingly identical to an RS1 Classic Box. I've seen them in the window at J&R in downtown Manhattan. Corrugated white cardboard with a piece of paper glued to the front, printed with RS1. It might say "i" but I'm not sure.

The new wooden boxes are completely different from the classic boxes. They are twice as deep and twice as heavy. I think the new boxes will protect the headphones better but in my opinion the old boxes are MUCH better looking.
I posted some photos in the earlier pages of this thread and also started a new thread a while ago:

You know, I thought the bowls + tape mod would be the same thing but it really isn't.. you do NEED the flats.
