5V dc power supply

Searching for good 5V dc power supply schematic.

That can deliver min 0.5A with very low noise.

how good? for what purpose?

Sigma11 can be setup for 5v
sigma11 seems a little overkill for most projects that need 5v (maybe a gamma 1?). Check Newark for the US or Farnell for the UK. They have regulated for lower noise, cost you ~$40 after shipping. $15 will buy a switching supply at other places.

It would be pretty easy to set up a TREAD for a 5V supply. That would be my first choice.

I REALLY doubt the Gamma1 requires 500mA and if you try to pull that much through most regulators, you better have some very big heatsinks.

Gamma1 is not a high-end DAC, I wouldn't go above a TREAD.

I think the gamma1 only needs 100ma, so it shouldn't pull that much. Tread sounds good.

Maybe try the LM7805.

It isn't?

Not really, not that it is not a value. High-end would usually equal $1000+ starting with maybe a Northstar so don't think little of it.

Any Motorola PDA or Blackberry charger puts out 5v at 1a. Heck, a NEW one at walmart is only $9. Those little switchers are surprisingly quiet too.

Check amb's site. The power supply only needs to deliver 300ma.
I think 300mA is quite a bit more than the quiescent current of the Gamma1. I had fairly large DACs pull considerably less current than that. Anyways, 300mA will still require some sort of heatsink on almost any PSU you choose and with the Sigma11, you should consider a well ventilated chassis.

Ripped from here----->

(which is the datasheet for the Linear regulated AC adapter suggested in the Gamma 1 docs)

Is it bad that I use the USB in put to power my gamma1? I use one of those ipod power bricks (110v in, 5v out through a usb female) connected to a usb to mini usb into my gamma1. I haven't tried a dedicated 5v psu through the psu jack but I doubt there would be much of a difference.
