The Mountain Goats?

Sounds like an interesting band to check out, but...where to start?

The Sunset Tree would be a good place to start.

They/he are/is ****ing amazing.

I feel the most accessible album is Heretic Pride. Every song is excellent. The Sunset Tree is a good choice as well though. Don't be frightened away by his lo-fi stuff either. Most of the stuff he releases is a treat

I own Tallahassee, The Sunset Tree, Heretic Pride, Get Lonely, The Coroner's Gambit, All Hail West Texas, and Black Pear Tree (collaboration with Kaki King).

If I had to rank them, it'd go...
Heretic Pride
barely better than
The Sunset Tree
better than
Tallahassee
equal to
All Hail West Texas
barely better than
Black Pear Tree
equal to
The Coroner's Gambit
better than
Get Lonely

I would start with The Sunset Tree and go from there to All Hail West Texas. I think that All Hail is their best album, but you need to be able to get into it. Sunset Tree is a great introm. Jon Darnielle has released in the vicinity of 500 songs over his career, and most of it is excellent. After those two albums, I would say Talahassee and then just pick your own.

I am not as into these guys as the previous posters, but I can vouch for "Tallahassee."

All Hail West Texas took me five years to get into since the low, low fi recording really put me off.
now I love it

enjoy and happy listening

vocals are important to me.. so I couldn't really enjoy it.

I think his nasal voice is enchanting

The Mountain Goats are one of my top bands. Tallahassee is my fave with Sunset Tree being right behind. I actually love the newest stuff, the Black Pear Tree EP with Kaki King and the Satanic Messiah EP he put out, too.

Go see a show by them you won't regret it. His voice is spot on, and they put on an amazing show.

The natural progression after the Mountain Goats is Built to Spill and Neutral Milk Hotel.

Yeah I definitely want to see him live. Once I get my driver's license I'll probably drive to New York to see him, because most people don't go to Connecticut on tours =\

All Hail & Tallahassee are my favorites, followed by A Coroner's Gambit. i really like his work with The Extra Glenns as well. there are quite a few tracks available on http://www.mountian-goats.com and Absolutely Kosher Records (record label) and Epitonic.com: Your Source for Cutting-Edge Music

edit: also recommend checking out Neutral Milk Hotel....

Another vote for "All Hail" here.

If you're "moving on" to Neutral Milk Hotel, it's best to go straight to "In an Aeroplane Over The Sea". Also, as with most of these bands, it's best to listen to the entire album once or twice through before you make a decision.

My favorite Mountain Goats song, without a doubt, is "no children".

Yes and hell yes. No Children is the song that originally got me into The Mountain Goats.

These are my favorite bands to find out about because the music is amazing, the shows are fantastic, and they have a small enough following where I can see a nice intimate show, but big enough they can do decent tours. I hate having some of my favorite bands only play some place in Brooklyn.

I'm definitely with Heretic Pride as the most accessible but his albums are all well constructed, if not eloquent and certainly interesting. I gotta say I love them all.
