Grado Burn In

Thread Starter
I am pretty new to the world of hi end headphones, and I was a little unsure about this whole "Burn-in" dealio.

However, I went to the music library here on campus, and when I went to use a computer, I realized that all the computer stations had SR-60's on them! I plugged a set into my iPhone to listen to some tunes, and I immediately noticed how much warmer and more mellow the sound was than my SR-325is's which I just received last week.

I take it that this is because of the hundreds more hours that have been put into the 60's at the library. It almost made me want to take a pair....

Or perhaps it's because the SR60 and SR325i are completely different kinds of Grado sounds?

Nice music library

Could be due to burn in or could be because you like the sound signature of the SR-60 more than the 325is

It probably takes about 2-3 weeks to 'burn in' depending on your usage. However, SR325i does not sound the same as SR60 and I am not sure it has the same level of warmth as SR-60.

I would say that it is just the 325i. It has a much brighter sound than the 60.

ditto

To be totally honest, I prefer the SR-60 to the 325i. It just isn't as euphoric... it's clean and clinical but not in the same pleasurable and tuned way that the MS2i is.

For me, Grados improve with burn in - without a doubt. Running pink noise for 24 hours made a difference

thats a pretty weird music library..
im not sure why open headphones but i can only imagine overlapping sound leakages from everywhere at once

the 325i is a very bright headphone. however, new, they are pretty unbearable. mine became listenable at ~200hrs. i just had them playing music all day for a while. now they sound amazing. probably required about 500hrs to totally settle.

Take a brand new SR325i and then take a SR325i bought from Craigslist (over a year old, used). The two will sound noticeably different, since one contains a set of transducers which were used and 'broken-in', netting a mellower and more effortless sound. Sure, you can take into account that the 325i is a bright headphone compared to others in its price range, but, IMO, break-in cannot be overlooked; Especially with a Grado.

I am also curious about this as I am in the process of burning in my SR80is... right out of the box, I found them so bright they actually hurt to listen to at a decent volume. I thought "good god, if these are warmer than the SR60s, I can't imagine what those must be like!

After about 8 hrs. of music and 10 hrs of pink noise they sound much more relaxed and rounded, but I am still hoping for a little more warmth...

Has anyone had exp. burning-in the 80is? Should I be doing or listening for anything in particular?

Having owned SR-80s back in 2007, I can tell you that they share the same drivers as the 80i and need at least 100 hours of loud music or pink noise, or preferably both. They become a different headphone in this time.

I was made a true believer in burn-in after witnessing the change that my 325i went through after 20+ hours of listening in between several days of pink noise and spot frequency tones from 10 Hz. to 20 kHz at low volume.

How long would a pair of SR80i's take to burn in?

I got my hands on some and I'm quite disappointed over my other

headphones. Should I just leave them playing music all day?
