The Forum Signal:Noise Ratio... - Page 7

I like Duggeh's suggestion. It is easy to poke at it and call him elitist, just like it's easy for politicians to take superficial cheap shots at one another in blatant attempts to put egg on their opponents' faces and keep it off their own. Don't get so freakin' defensive.

Like it or not, post count is a surrogate for credibility when noobs visit this forum and ask what kind of headphones work best for youtube audio or whatever. Nobody is suggesting that we should never post inane tripe (at least, that's not what I read). However, should posting inane tripe cause your credibility to elevate? I say no. I'm a 500+ member, and that number inflates my noob-perceived credibility beyond what it should be, because if I may be honest, most of my posting has been in the lounge - not because I want to increase my post count, but because I like general discussion with intelligent people and I'm not qualified to offer a lot of gear advice. I could abuse my noob-cred by telling people to buy a can/amp I've never heard, but I won't. Some people do, however, and implementing Duggeh's suggestion would probably mitigate some potential harm that stems from this.

Yay, I just increased my post count by one.

Just like I have lurked here before 2004. What is your point? My point is, things have changed since before your join date, since that is all I have to go by.

Hey, I can live with that label. I am quite good at judging, and I am as militantly in favor of judgment as you are vice versa. I can and WILL judge threads that are beyond stupid and label them as such (Here is an example), much like I have been colorfully labeled "elitist and snooty" (Again that is not a slam to me) by you.

I do wonder about some of the more pointless threads in the members lounge. To my mind, the members lounge is the electronic version of a social gathering place that allows us to discuss or raise issues that are not directly related to audio or headphones. In the real world, we have any number of similar provisions. Teachers have a staff room, many of us have a tea room at work and students have various areas to congregate and interact.

I'll now get to my point. In the real world, how many of you would start a conversation with someone about 'the last thing you copy and pasted'? Or, 'what was the last thing they bought'?

Personally, I'd be happy for moderators to make a call about dross threads and lock them as required. People will get the message soon enough about pointless threads.

As for pointless posts in sensible threads, this will always happen in the electronic world as it does in the real world. But, I believe that removing the supremus label will reduce the incentive for people to artificially boost their post counts.

Still sounds far more interesting than the last thing I copied and pasted, or that I bought milk and bread at the store on the way home.

Quite. and yet, it seems when I brought up the frankly dumb thread names issue a week or so ago, one of the mods (annonymously - they didn't see fit to explain their "joke") decided they'd be oh so clever by adding a rather silly custom name to my profile.

Whoever did that, you can remove it now, thanks. I realise it might not be popular to attempt to elevate the forum above the inane, but is it really necessary to mock somone for caring?

You can have it, just ask to have it transferred, I'm ok with that

Well IMO that's pretty tacky. Perhaps there's a mod out there who could do with a little moderation himself.

Your lucky it's actually a privilege to get a nickname , FYI they are never nice nicknames that get given out, always mocking names and inside jokes.

I don't know, some are pretty damn funny and lighthearted. If craiglester is correct in his assertion, I'd say that is pretty crappy if it bothers him. I frankly wouldn't care, but to each their own.

Also, the fact that Samgotit does not have one is a crime

Yea, well, your avatar is one ugly mofo. That's about all I know about you and care to know.

It's funny that my inane thread asking what your favourite colour is got removed and that one didn't. I protest against the impartial moderation.
