AD900 - A subbjective story with a detailed review - Page 3

Heh funny thing about the bass. First time I put 'em on I actually thought they were rather bass-heavy.
Now I ab-so-lute-ly adore them. I'm not one to juggle audiophile lingo, but I think 'impact' is a nice approximation what I like about it. It's really, really nice.
Also: it's there, but it doesn't disrupt the 'layers' of the music, if you catch my drift. If I listen to my EP630 for example, the bass really drowns out most of the music. I don't like it much (though they're excellent value for money IMO... €19 over here btw).

Yeah i see what you mean, that's the kind of bass i'm after. I like when the bass is very clean and doesn't make the whole music sound muddy, but it needs to be punchy at the same time. I think that's something that you can only find with analytical sound. Anyway i should receive the AD900s within a few days i hope it will satisfy my expectetion

KT88, try the "phat pad mod" on your AD900s.

Apparently it helps a lot for the comfort problems you seem to have.

Some people say it doesn't effect the SQ, some say it does. So you gotta see for yourself I guess.
I can vouch for this mod, it works. I'm one of those people that have sensitive ears -- so I can't wear supraural headphones for long. I can only listen to Grado's for so long.

Anyways, I digress. Good review KT88 -- I loved my AD's when I had them for their sense of space/airiness/soundstage. I especially loved watching movies with them. The unfortunate thing of the mod is that it moves the driver away from your ear quite a bit, and as a result, the bass slam I think was affected; at least as I remember it -- because I always found the bass on my AD's sometimes lean. However I was driving them right out of the source without an amp, so amp may play a factor. And I might be a basshead as my 'just right' headphones at the moment are the '05 DT770's . I will probably pick the AD's up again at some point, but I'd like to try an AD2k before then. From what I read, the difference between an AD700 and AD900 is a lot more pronounced than the A700 vs. A900.

Also, as people have mentioned, if leakage is an issue, these are not for you. If you turn it just slighlty loud they can double as small PC speakers.

@mobbaddict: I've just read the PFE and the AD900 actually sound quite similar. I've got a PFE incoming, and you already have one... let's see who beats who to the punch

Oh where did you read that? I've been looking for something similar to the Phonak/Etymotic sound and i've also come to the conclusion the AD900 might be a good equivalent. But from what i read i think the Phonaks are slightly more bassy (similar to DT880s). Anyway it will be interesting to compare our opinions

Because of its flat drivers, does the ad900 has a worse soundstage than the ad700? (for gaming)
