Joe Grado HP-1000 Special

Just put together a "Joe Grado Special" system with a pair of HP-2s, HPA-1 Amp w/ external PSU, and the Joe Grado ICs. Just for kicks - all the cables are the Ultra-wide Bandwidth cable besides the cables inside the amp (I think it has the standard cable - haven't opened it up as the screws are really tight). This is the way in which Mr. Grado intended the HP-1000s to be heard. The AZ Silver Reference sounds better, but this setup has some history behind it in a way. Sounds pretty good.

truly badass setup. to this day i am interested in hearing the hpa-1, if only because joe put it together. but i do wonder what joe thinks of the melos amps..

wish we could get him to go to the next grado meet. i have a few things he should heard.

I have a similar setup, Hp1s,Hp3s,Hpa2 and signature interconects.
The synergy between the hp phones and hpa amp is one to hear.
Joe Grado just moved To north Carolina so I don't think he will be at any future meets.

Does changing the source used vary the sound considerably?

According to the literature with the HPA-1 amp, the Reference cable was developed for it. The power cables going into the amp are labelled as the Reference cable, as is the umbilical for the (regulated) wall wart. So, my suspicion is that the Reference cable was used throughout.

i heard the last version of the hp-1000 cable was unlabeled and is almost identical to the current rs-1 cable. so much lure going on with the hp-1000 series.. i wish somebody would make a webpage to store all this lovely information.


p.s. the true joe grado setup is with hp-1's.

There are 3 versions of the hp series phone cables ,the last one was the combination of the best sonic qualities of the first 2 cables according to Joe Grado. And Grinch it is labeled ,says standard referance or signature I believe, I will have to look at it later for what it says on it. As I recently bought the newest version cable from Joe Grado before he moved.

i am definitely interested in knowing this. i had heard that he had some replacement cables available, and almost thought of trying to contact him for one but i heard they all got bought up. i believe mine says "signature" (like the one in the above pictures) so i wonder which one was the latest and greatest. thanks for the info!

Grado Signature Laboratory Standard Audio Cable.

Did anyone ever find out the difference between the HPA-1 and the HPA-2? I read two old posts that addressed this question but there didn't seem to be any conclusion.

That's interesting! The Laboratory Standard is usually thought of as the cable that came before the Reference cable. However, if Joe Grado indicated that it's the most recent cable, he's the one who would know.
