A Headphone Worth Checking out under $100 : Sony MDR-XB700

Hello Guys,

This past week I found myself at the Sony Style Store at Woodfield Mall in Chicago last Sunday.

I was simply messing around with netbooks and checking things out.

Well, of course I found myself gravitating towards the headphones and DAP's.

Most were well....all... of the headphones sounded pretty bad comming out of the Sony DAP's Headphone Jack. Well, I decided to try out them all on my iPod Touch Headphone output, all still sounded bad. Then, tried them out on my amped system. Going through the rounds, I was expecting the same results this time and it was true....But WAIT!

The last headphone in the lot, the Sony MDR-XB700 sounded good - REALLY Good! Nice large soundstage, excelent midrange and the bass emphasis was gone. The highs were still a bit more recessed than I personally like, but dang these were nice sounding headphones.

They isolate very well, are extremely comfortable and well made. They look ugly as sin on your head or in public. Heh, that is to be expected and perhaps manditory of full sized headphones.

Did they sound as detailed as my modded ESW9's?

No. Considering that the MDR-XB700's can be had for $99 shipped and the Stock ESW9's are $299 + the cost of Mods/Cable, that isn't fair. However, the sound of the XB700's was much more enveloping and was like being in a Plush leather chair, just sinking in.

The sound reminds me very much of the Denon D2000, only with less bloat and a bigger soundstage.
The construction on the XB700's is better and much more durable with the comfort being about the same.

Without a basic amp, these do not really sound good and ALL of the other headphones in the XB series are AWEFUL and the Bass in those is beyond ridiculous. I would avoid the rest of the series as much as is possible.

If you already own a portable and use it as double duty for at home as well, these may just be your home cans. Heck, even the output of a receiver or bigger power output player like a Zune or iRiver could be enough. My in-store evaulation was just that and

Why didn't I buy a set? I need another pair of headphones like a hole in my head - it was still hard to leave empty handed.

I do hope that this is a step for Sony going into the right direction again and hopefully we will see a portable equivalent from Sony since the V6 and subsequent studio monitors have left a lot to be desired (not including the high end).

For less than $100, you get a solid headphone with performance beating its price tag and comfy to boot.

Cheers!

Wow. Those are huge. Every search I get returns "Extra Bass King-Size Series" "Big Booming Bass". Amazon reviews confirms that they are not boomy like they seemed designed to be.

I wouldn't mind getting a hold on some of those monster truck tire pads for mods. OTOH, I think these things are more ridiculous looking then the vintage 70s phones in that other thread.

They would make excellent Ortho Donors because of the Comfort.

Just saw the review on amazon. Wonder which one of us that could be?

Man I am no where near dropping 99 for a donor 'phone. If I see them on display I will check them out though.

Where did you find these for $100? Last time I checked they were $150 on AC.

Edit: Nevermind, my bad for being too hasty. Last time I commented on these, people thought I was weird for wanting them for the huge-pad novelty. Nice to know that's not the only reason to look at these.

$100 to pull out the drivers? hell no. But you're right about them looking ugly as sin. I cannot imagine how sweaty ones ears would get in those absurdly large pads.

Where for a 100? I was bragging on these since January. It's time I buy a pair.

In before FOTM takes a hold of this thread.

I love the look, but I wish it was single sided cable.

yeah, what's the point to dual entry

I've opened a thread about that, but no clues yet: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f133/d...0/#post5565245

apparently, the pads are so big that your ears are not in contact w/ the drivers felt? that must feel great, I can't stand that....had to do some heavy modding on my 770 to achieve it

I had been eyeing those kinda pads since I first saw them, but the price kinda seemded steep just to use some pads.

You mentioned it was D2000-esque.
I found the D2000 to have a fizzy treble that pierced (too many spikes me thinks).
The less bloaty bass thing seems good, but I prefer warmer vocals and less piercing trebles.
(Im suprised they have a larger soundstage than the d2k!).

From this how do you think the Sony's would suit my tastes?

Thanks

Well the good news with these headphones is that you have half a chance of actually hearing them in a retail store. Sony Style stores have them and I anm sure taht B&H, etc. would too. Try them out.

If you are thinking of D2000's, these would be a viable cheaper alternative. I have no idea what modding them would do or whether you would even want to do it. The mere fact that they isolate so much better is enough of a reason for many.Though I did not do a side by side comparison and my experience with the D2000 is not extensive. The D2000 may have a bit more detail, but no side by side so... The only thing I can say is the modded/recabled ESW9's have more detail and the modifications make it more detailed that the standard ESW9. The XB700 didn't miss anything and the difference was relatively small in terms of detail between the two.

Given the quality of the construction, I would say that these are well worth the $100.
IMO sound better than the D1000 and the ES7 for the same price. However, both of those are portable so different markets I suppose.

hmm? i still think these are a tad bloaty. nowhere near the D2000 separation. but it is very very comfy. here in singapore it is priced at SGD200 which is around USD130. it is still within the same price range as the d1001 and ES7, though.
however i still think that ES7 beats these in SQ, hands down. better mids and highs, tighter bass. punchier and livelier.

IMO.

These are great. I use them everyday as a portable out of my Cowon D2+. Extremely easy to drive.

Too bad I paid AUD $260. As usual us Aussies are getting ripped off.
