Creative ideas for worst case/best case versions of balanced cables for HD 800 (got plugs only...

Well title kinda says it all. I got HD 800 plugs, the dual XLR plugs and [i gather] pretty professional equipment at work + quite a few E.E.'s to help me in case I fail at the soldering part - which is likely to happen since the closest I get to soldering is FPGA's typically. Also got mech. engineers and such in case that the shielded plugs for HD 800 goes haywire - which I really doubt but its always nice to have friendly backup.

I really want need is some good inspiration for the cable it self. I already are getting stock TRS AND stock balanced by my friends at Sennheiser (who helped supplied plugs BTW - very nice people - I'm not at all biased ). So what I'm thinking is 2 part.

1. Have a really "crappy" but workable cable - possibly TRS plug even. That means no shielding and only good copper wire without being unpractical. Just so I can hear for my self the result of a good job of doing a bad job So get creative on the bad practices!

2. A really nice DIY shield balanced one both in looks and practicality - that is 2 feet or 0.5 meter length or so with stylish/expensive DIY looks and good cables and shielding net.

So ladies and gentlemen please start your creative brain trust!

After mulling cables over for a while now I've decided on Mogami 2893 for my new balanced recable projects. It has good size and flex with a shield and 4 conductors. I will know sometime next week how it works out. I would go for Vampire if I had a little more in the budget.

You might try some of Navships (Ebay) wire. This is generally stranded, silver plated copper, with teflon sleeve. I always have thought a quick and easy Getto balanced cable would just be two parrallel strands of this wire. 22 AWG Silver Teflon Wire 2 Wires Twisted Pair. So one twisted pair for each channel, just cut a 25 ft length of this in half for 12.5 ft cable set. Use a half inch piece of shrink wrap every 6-8 inches to hold them reasonably well together. Don't bother with a sleeve. If you want he also sells the same wire in a shieled version, and in 24 awg if you prefer. This would be super easy to build and cheap at $10-20 for the wire depending on size and shielding. mostly available in white.

25' 22 AWG Silver Teflon Wire 2 Wires Twisted Pair - eBay (item 380102471222 end time Jun-06-09 12:36:55 PDT)

Hope this helps, and let us know hwat you try. I have also thought about some testing and comparisons. I would also vote for the Mogami mini quad wire which I am using currently.
