Audio-gd Reference 1 DAC (56 K warning) - Page 116

I'd leave the dip switches where they are until the DAC is fully burned in PG, that way you'll be able to judge the various settings from a position of familiarity.

Have you checked the link to the DSP1 on the RE1 page ? I printed out the picture that was posted on that page and used that to fart around with the settings but I now leave it at the factory default settings (which are 8X OS,-130db stop band Attenuation,Data Dithering ON which is off...I know it's confusing, Output bit 24)

Congrats on your pick up BTW You can seal up the openings with some high density foam (black in color) if you are worried about dust (which is a worry worth paying attention to) or some other method that does the job and looks good. I wonder why Kingwa added the vents if it makes no difference in cooling the unit ? I guess it makes some customers feel better ? I think an option should be made available at the time of purchase (solid vs vented top plate). That would satisfy everyone's wishes I would think.

Peete.

PS: I'll be swapping out the digital board of my RE1 tomorrow (back to the original one) since I now feel well enough to do it. Wish me luck boys....and keep your fingers crossed that this swap solves the mystery.

I told Kingwa I wanted a solid topped Phoenix and he sent it that way without question.
I would like to hear more impressions of the different settings myself.

Good luck Peete!

Man this DAC is worth every penny and every minute I spent walking in the cold with it in my arms.
I'm now using it with the Compass and SQ has increased dramatically. Sound is great and I do not feel at all that it is too neutral. Bass is a lot better, so are details and dynamics and soundstage. I'm now listening to the album Cross from Justice which is a great electornic band and the songs sound so much better. I feel I was missing so much before. I can't wait for what's next as it burns it more.

I'm emailing Kingwa for a full plain top cover unless IPodPJ wants to buy it off from me.

Congrats on your new DAC, punk-guy!!! It is a killer DAC. No, sorry I won't be parting with my top plate. The Ref1 doesn't get nearly as hot as the Phoenix, so no worries there. The bottom gets hot, but I don't feel that -- still not nearly as hot as the Phoenix.

Now I'm not so sure I want to part with the Phoenix. I may want to keep it as my tubey-sounding amp. Decisions decisions decisions. If only it had more bass detail.

I just received a loaner cable from Peter at Double Helix Cables. It's his flagship Complement cable, and his personal one as well. It is by far the best HD800 cable I've tried; best headphone cable I've tried. I've been listening to it for most of the evening. The channel separation and soundstage are larger than life. Both channels are completely separate cables, and I feel that is the main reason it performs so well. It uses very good wire, too. I will be having him make me one shortly. It's brought new life to the Phoenix. (Peter also has a Phoenix, HD800, and the DAC that came before the Ref1 (I forget which model) so I'm sure that is one reason this cable pairs so well with them.)

Just thought I'd mention that since I'm enjoying this amp once again.

...or, perhaps, I wasn't?

Yes, I'm terribly indecisive sometimes.

The DIP switch settings on the DSP board are here. I re-formatted the information Kingwa sent me to make it easier to read. As PP said, don't bother changing them, except maybe just to get an idea what happens when you, say, switch filtering off.

iPodPJ: The Phoenix is not a "tubey sounding amp". If you want one that sounds that way, you need a tube amp or one with deliberately induced distortion.

By the way, I've replaced the ACSS jacks on the Ref 1 with ITT Cannon mini-XLRs, but have yet to do so with the Phoenix as they didn't have enough of the correct sockets in the shop where I bought them.

Maybe replacing phoenix's internal SPC wiring with plain copper will make the bass more to your liking.

Grats on your Ref1, punk! Big upgrade from the Compass eh? I'm in love with mine (although it's still a DAC8, needs the fancy new digital board...cry)

Les, why so serious?
Yeah a big one indeed. It is a night and day difference. i however still am using the Compass to amp my my headphones. Peete still has my Phoenix but I can't wait to try it with Phoenix and CAST cables.

I just tune him out. He's not even worthy of a response.

You should make up some custom DC and CAST cables for the Phoenix. You'll find it adds a lot of detail to the amp.
