Yeah, I think Mastodon really hit on something with Crack the Skye. It's not even a question for me that it's their best work.

I think Crack The Skye is a repetitive album but in a good way. Most of the songs revolve around a central hook or chorus heavily. Most of the time, I find this repetitiveness to be distracting and annoying, but for the most part, the repetitiveness on this album sounds good and well thought out. The tone and structure of the hooks and choruses match the cover art and intended atmosphere nicely.

I am still digging The Last Baron in my car. It has some outstanding drum fills and the last solo just kills every time. It is simple, but man, it is a fun ending to a great album.

CTS is my least favorite album.

Cant put my finger on it exactly, but something about it really irritates me.

I have not given any other album of theirs proper attention yet, but I would be interested to read what you think irritates you when you have a clearer idea.

I can see why you might be turned off if you really dig the other albums, because Crack The Skye is a very different album compared to the others based on what I did hear of them. I hear a more progressive sound with the vocals mainly being replaced by the Ozzy-ish sound rather than the "shouty" vocals.

I was immediately attracted to this album, so hopefully there will be much to like about the others as well. I have them, I just do not have a good stretch of time to give them their due.

As I said, the vocals on this album are terrible. Truly a step backwards for anyone who enjoys metal vocals

I enjoyed Mastodon more when they were more metal than prog. In CTS, they are more prog than metal, which is why Leviathan will always be my favorite Mastodon album

I bought Blood Mountain when it came out to see what Mastodon was all about, but didn't quite like it ... Crack The Skye on the other hand, is very listenable.

Are Mastodon's earlier albums any good?

Blood Moutain is better, way better.
Leviathan is better.

If they really wanted to change and go the way they did, they should have become more like Pink Floyd. They just sound like they are on pain pills is all. They should have really went for it and gone more cosmic. More synths more dreamy parts with sound effects. More like a movie soundtrack would have been better than the way his voice buggs the !@#$ out of me. They could have made it an instumental. I just hope I do not start to hate his voice on Blood Mountain or Leviathan in the future because of CTS.

Cant put my finger on it, but the musical composition, although interesting in a progressive sense, just irritates me. Almost like the music doesnt go where I want it to go. It lacks the dynamics and punch that I have grown accustomed to from their earlier albums.
It is no doubt an interesting album and a solid effort, but too far removed from their original formula for my liking.

This indeed adds to the irritation as well.

Agreed.

Seabeast is epic.

All of their earlier albums are excellent; Blood Mountain in my opinion being the most technically interesting/challenging, while I find Leviathan to be their most melodic and accessible.

Agreed on the synthy/spacey aspects; dont worry about the vocals on the earlier albums-they are superior to those of CTS.

x2

Though I do like CTS it does not dethrone Leviathan.
