I can see why you might be turned off if you really dig the other albums, because Crack The Skye is a very different album compared to the others based on what I did hear of them. I hear a more progressive sound with the vocals mainly being replaced by the Ozzy-ish sound rather than the "shouty" vocals.
I was immediately attracted to this album, so hopefully there will be much to like about the others as well. I have them, I just do not have a good stretch of time to give them their due.

Cant put my finger on it, but the musical composition, although interesting in a progressive sense, just irritates me. Almost like the music doesnt go where I want it to go. It lacks the dynamics and punch that I have grown accustomed to from their earlier albums.
It is no doubt an interesting album and a solid effort, but too far removed from their original formula for my liking.

This indeed adds to the irritation as well.

Agreed.
Seabeast is epic.

Are Mastodon's earlier albums any good?

All of their earlier albums are excellent; Blood Mountain in my opinion being the most technically interesting/challenging, while I find Leviathan to be their most melodic and accessible.

If they really wanted to change and go the way they did, they should have become more like Pink Floyd. They just sound like they are on pain pills is all. They should have really went for it and gone more cosmic. More synths more dreamy parts with sound effects. More like a movie soundtrack would have been better than the way his voice buggs the !@#$ out of me. They could have made it an instumental. I just hope I do not start to hate his voice on Blood Mountain or Leviathan in the future because of CTS.

Agreed on the synthy/spacey aspects; dont worry about the vocals on the earlier albums-they are superior to those of CTS.
