I'm listening to the "Oblivion" and it does indeed sound promising. Will look forward to hearing the whole album.

Comes out the 24th but its on a bunch of sites as a leak.

Through a friend I was able to take a listen to the album and it is amazing (I didn't know it wasn't out yet, so when I went to actually purchase it I was quite surprised). The album is an odd genre because its not what I would call metal but damn is it heavy. The melodies are great, and I love the guys voice. I am anxious to get my hands on a copy of this when it comes out.

Edit: I listened to it again after I posted this (Disclaimer: I have it on preorder). It is such an unbelievable cd. I am not really into crazy metal but this does a perfect balance of melody and head-banging heaviness.

Not to toot my horn or be mr fancy pants or anything, but I just remembered this clip.
It's the band I was in at the time (Dozer) on the last night of the 2005 European tour we did supporting Mastodon. Bill & Troy (of Mastodon) joined us on stage at the end of a jam to do a short cover of Clutch's "Big News I". We did it three nights but I think this is the only one caught on film.
I can honestly say that that is the most fun I've ever had on stage. Easily.

I'm looking forward to it. I listened to a few tracks on their MySpace, and it sounded great.

Yeah, I get a bit nostalgic watching that one... good times.

Eh... Listening to the album, and while they can still play the vocal style seems to have gone way downhill (though this was present on Blood Mountain too) I can't help but wish for the raw fury of Leviathan, but I guess I wasn't really expecting the new album to surpass that. I just wish that it was heavier.

First couple of tracks sound kinda weak to me as well.
Its like Mastodon Lite.

I've only heard what they've played live, and it sounds ok. Definitely not as heavy or sludgy as their earlier stuff (comparing it to Remission-era Mastodon is like night and day). I am seeing them on their summer tour (for the 4th time haha) and they're playing the entire album live so I hope its good!

I will admit I have never heard anything by Mastodon OTHER than "Crack the Skye", but I *really* like it! I bought it on a recommendation since I like Opeth, Dream Theater, and Isis. And this album, from that perspective, is outstanding.

^Yep, true that. A lot of old Mastodon fans claim it strays too much from their style, but I think both sides of Mastodon are awesome. In fact, I must say I prefer the more proggy, more high-quality Mastodon!

Mastodon gets a lot of play time on my system, but I'm a late convert. I picked up the last two albums the day they dropped, but got all the earlier stuff later.

To my ears, they've progressed steadily. A few moments on "Blood Mountain" shine very brightly to me, but in general "Crack The Skye" is their best work yet, IMHO.
