Ultra Desktop DAC - Page 2

Have you read about their even newer chips, the ES9012 and ES9018? (These two new ones both have the same specs apparently, I think one is just made somewhere else.)

These babies have even higher specs and better jitter correction than the ES9008, from what I can tell.

But I guess you have to wonder at what point is something overkill. The new HR UltraDAC sounds like a winner.
Tyll, does it have discrete output or is it op-amp based?

Sorry for what may be a dumb question, but I am assuming that this DAC is upsampling, is that correct? And if so, is it defeatable?
I didn't see anywhere on the chip's specs that it upsamples, only that it allows up to 200kHz sampling rate input. If the UltraDAC does upsample, it's probably using another chipset to do so.

Bump...

There is disappointingly little information about this new DAC.

Any reviews?

You might want to also post your question in the CanJam impressions thread.

I'll look there

EDIT: I'm also looking for reviews.

The 9008 is an upsampling chip right out of the box; it's non-defeatable ... it's part of the way it works so well.

The newer chips do measure better and have a few more EQ functions (that we'd not use anyway). We'll probably roll the new parts in somewhere along the line, but the difference between nearly-perfect and perfecter isn't much.

I don't know of many reviews yet ... did see one somewhere though. It's basically like all our stuff: really good reproduction is just a straight pipe, and it usually takes a little while to grow on people.

Like people kinda poo-pooed the looks of our amps until they got to live with them for a while and then they really like it cuz it's friendly and comfortable. Shouting gets attention, but it's bothersome after a while.

Got one of these.. brought it for the pibeing abilities and its looks so little of it self that if I hadn't told before hand that it was to be used for techincal research my significant would have killed me spending so much on something that looked even less expensive than my graphics chips and such. Ironicly it came in a bigger box than any other chip based product I have ever owned and with way less boaty marketing than any of the big graphicscard gigants booxies. Thought mine came with DPS, BUDA and cables so it was more the shipping box than the actual box that was impressive...

Well, I broke down and bought one. Tyll's statement above resonates with me. HeadRoom's gear tends to grow on me. I have not yet been disappointed with any HR gear, so I'm pretty excited to try this DAC. I'll post impressions out in the "wild."

Sorry about your wallet, mate, but not about your ears. I think you'll like it. Thanks for posting out in the "wild", please post a linky here when you do, okay? Looking forward to your impressions.

Not sure if this has been answered elsewhere, but can the DAC output out of both RCA and XLR simultaneously?

Yup.

How different is the stand alone desktop ultra dac (which has balanced out) and the dac in the new ultra desktop (dac+amp+single ended only)

I guess a different way to ask the question:

Other than the balanced option in the balanced desktop amp and desktop ultra dac, are the modules the same as the combo Ultra Desktop DAC/AMP with single ended only?
