New speakers

I'm looking into a new pair of speakers. I feel my speakers- Ruark Etures - have a splashy top end. It feels like the tweeter is louder than it should be, it sticks out. Hard to explain. My system is generally pre IAG Audiolab/Tag Mclaren. Budget to £1000 I have no problem with buying second hand speakers (as long as not going back more than used for 5 years) Preferbly standmounts. I may go for larger style standmounts with slightly deeper bass response. Think front ported or sealed would be better than rear ported as I can't pull speakers too forward into the room (about 2' from the wall)

Hey, youre taking attention from my thread!!!!

LOL....Just kidding.

You dont like the Paradigms,Swans, and other speakers we were talking about in the other thread?

Maybe go for Magnepans, Apogees, or Martin Logans? They dont have annoying tweeters.

Magnepan MMG?

Not sure if Swans are sold in the UK. Only cheap Paradigms sold here. Probably need better amps with Martin Logans.

I like Paradigm because they are made right here in Canada, and they make a solid product good for HT and music, but if I was in the UK, I'd be looking at any number of the good UK based brands you have available.

Pro Ac, Epos Acoustics M12i, B&W CM5, Harbeth HL-P3ES-2, Dynaudio (from Denmark) Excite or Focus, and Quad would also be on my shopping list. If you want a truly laid back sound, the B&W CM series is the ticket, the Dynaudio have a superbly listenable quality that is never fatiguing but yet still detailed and clear sounding.

Paradigms tend to be foward and clear sounding, so if you are looking for a less splashy treble, you'd probably want to avoid them anyway

Just placed a 2 ply sheet of toilet paper under the speaker grille just in front of the tweeter. It has knocked off a little bit of top-end, and tamed it down a bit.

Cheap solution No need to replace them now.

You should start a new thread: "The toilet paper mod". Are there audible differences between brands? What about 4-ply? Would cryoing the paper make a noticeable difference?

Wanna modify the crossover?

I'll help...

I think cryoing the paper would make the speaker sound cold and analytical.
