And there are still plenty of people here who do it...or at least there was when it was very popular. There use to be a lot of diy'ers that sold sennheiser cables for decent prices without the 400-500% markup you pay for commercial alternatives.

I don't recall any of them operating in the fashion of the more well-known cable vendors, however. I'm sure you can get someone to make a DIY headphone cable for cheaper than SAA sells it, for example. I'm sure I can get my Toyota fixed for a DIY guy cheaper than Toyota service will do it. But that's apples and oranges really.

I'm talking about setting up a business like SAA with the web site and other purchasing availability, etc., and all that SAA offers, and cutting 200% off the price. That's somewhat of a different animal (or fruit, I guess).

Alex charges about half the price that SAA does with the same product and service offerings. I'm not sure how much cheaper one wants it to get...cutting 200% of the price would be less than free...

But back to the OP and the original topic, there is no proof worth mentioning so you are going to have to try them out for yourself. It is a simple fact that you will have to pay a price premium unless you buy used, but this is the case for other equipment too. With other equipment there is simply a higher price - to - performance ratio.

Who's Alex? I may be interested in replacing the cable on my HD650.

Apuresound. There is pretty much nothing but praise for his cables. If I were to recable a headphone I'd probably do it through him.

APureSound - Where The Music Is Always Pure - APS Audio LLC.

I really would like a decent extension cable for my Sennheiser without spending a fortune. I could use another 5 feet of length to reach my couch from my main rig. I could then lay down and rest with the headphones on, instead of lying on the floor.

10' wouldn't be bad either, giving me some extra slack. But I really don't want a Rat shack extension cord.

Thanks, I'll add them to my list. Their prices don't seem any cheaper, though. Of course, they're cheaper than SAA, but SAA is more expensive than almost everyone else. But Apuresound's prices seem to be right in line with what Moon Audio charges (Silver Dragon, Blue Dragon, etc.) and just a little bit more expensive than the Cardas from Headroom. I mean, they're definitely an option, but it's not like they're charing 50% of what everyone else is charging. They seem to be in the same price range as the majority of the aftermarket headphone cable vendors.

What are you looking to spend? Headroom has some nice extension cords from Cable Pro for around $90 or so. Before they were sold by Headroom, I had Cable Pro make me an extension, and they did a very nice job. Very sturdy cable that doesn't kink, with good connectors. Anyway, that's one option.

to OP: According to your profile, you have 2 portable amps. Spending $200 for a desktop amp is gonna do more for your Sennheisers than wasting it on cables.

Thanks, I'll check that out

I don't really like these threads because they are always misguided and I normally stay out of them, but I actually got emailed by 2 people on this and asked some questions.

I can't speak for other companies out there, but here at APureSound we design the wire and place huge custom orders for the wire (50-100k ft). If you look around you will see that ordering custom made wire requires a lot of investment. Also I can say prototyping is not cheap. I can't speak for others, but we spend a lot of time testing everything before it ever gets released. We even send prototype cables to long time customers to see what they think and continue to work off of that.

Our wire is very expensive due to materials used, but we are able to keep costs down by not having any middle men and get the wire custom ordered directly from a wire manufacturer.

I don't see how no one ever takes into consideration the cost of equipment that needs to be purchased: solder/de-solder station, oscilloscope, and high end Multimeter just to name a few. Also just like every other business we have to pay for taxes, electricity, web hosting, web development, ect.

Stop for a second and think how much profit there is for example on the Cardas HD connectors which MSRP at $16. How much do you think it costs for Cardas to make them? Keep in mind they are a mold and machine made. How much profit do you think Sennheiser is making with the HD800 headphones?

I will not say anymore, but I just wanted to give you guys some more to think about on this subject.

If anyone has any questions feel free to PM me or email me directly alex@apuresound.com

Thanks,
Alex

Thanks, Alex, nice to hear from some folks who are actually in the business and know what's involved.

I know this isn't the most scientific explanation but the frst time I tried the Blue Dragon it felt like there was more impact, bass, midrange. The closest thing I can explain what I felt was that it was like a floodgate opened. I guess it was like instead of getting hit in the head with a small stream of water, it was more like getting slammed with a wave. When I tried the silver dragon it just felt colder, edgier, not as warm as the blue dragon.
