Favourite U2 album - Page 3

Hmm...

I used to be a big fan of U2. Then I got into headphones and stuff and now I don't listen to it as much since the mastering isn't too good...

I liked all that you can't leave behind you though. Joshua tree is also good.

I chose War.

I think War balances nearly all of their strengths; there are certainly great songs ("Sunday, Bloody Sunday," "New Years Day," "Two Hearts Beat As One"). But it also is one of the best examples of their spacious, cinematic sound in a pure rock context. When the over-driven guitar leads well up out of "New Years Day," they conjure the kind of emotional response that only great, anthemic rock music can produce. Bono's vocals on that track are also my favorite of his entire career. When he sings "I...will be with you again" the emotional force is enough build a novel or a movie around.

If I remember correctly, War was a Lillywhite production. They got a lot more experimental in their later work with Lanois and Eno, but this represents their peak as a rock band, in my opinion. O.K., with the possible exception of Achtung Baby!

+1 as it's the only U2 album I enjoy. Also the only one I own.

I think the remasterings are pretty good, actually.

They are. This whole attitude that I cannot even listen to U2 because the mastering is so poor is pathetic. Some people miss out on some fantastic music because they let their audiophile snobbery rule over the music. Low fi, hi fi, if its good music- its worth a listen.

I've never been a big fan of U2, could never quite understand all the hype surrounding them.

If I was forced to listen to one of there albums it would be "The Joshua Tree".

I chose Zooropa but it is a toss up between Pop and Zooropa. Too bad you omitted Pop, arguably the most sophisticated U2 album ever.

Indeed. Giving up low-fi music would mean giving up bootlegs, for one thing, and a lot of bootlegs contain the most amazing live performances. And for me it'd mean giving up a lot of indie music. Elliott Smith and Bright Eyes pop right into mind.

Yea, had to leave something out, so I chose to leave out the least internationally popular (based on sales). And the newest. 10 is really limiting. <hint hint, nudge nudge, wink wink, Mr Moderator>

I think you did a good job picking 10. Zooropa would be another one I would have considered dropping off. Its a good album, but mostly considered by the band to be a sister project of sorts for Achtung.

Why do you dislike the POP album???

The poll has 2 albums missing:
1. Pop
2. No Line in the Horizon

Pop was omitted because...well, few people liked it. NLH was omitted because I'm not sure how many people have heard it. There were only 10 slots available, see. Those of you who put either of these in the top spot will just have to post, rather than vote.
I do not understand why everybody seems to dislike POP? Musically I can see that the first three-four tracks are different - but the last three tracks, examplified by "Wake up dead man" are the most inner-felt personally written songs from U2's entire career as far as I reckon.

The album as a whole is a masterpiece because it has so many layers. The first tracks are the surface - and how Bono wants to portrait the generation of the 90s in Europe. A very surface-oriented culture. But digging deeper into the album and going through the tracks on the CD the emotions gets deeper and deeper untill he cries Wake Up dead man (To himself) at the end.

POP gives me goosebumps more than all other U2 albums. And I feel that this is more than a picture of what U2 was all about back then and what they have become today. And it is also the reason I love this band - they have a message for us.

Great summary rasmashorn. I think most people misunderstood Pop. Irony and Satire were lost on most, particularly the reviewers. The concert tour didn't help clear that up either. But what you describe is exactly what I feel about the album. I think U2 pushed themselves for this album and come out with a masterpiece. Something connected to Achtung Baby and Zooropa (as well as Passengers) but wholly different too, more intimate and personal. Wake up deadman is indeed brilliant and on par with One in my opinion (though I suppose even I prefer One).

I can't edit the poll to go past 10 Sorry.
