Just picked up some SR-125

I have a friend that says he just cant stand open air headphones, so he sold me his beat up pair of grado sr-125 for a steal at $40. The metal part inside the headband is kinda messed up and the silver letters on the earcups are worn black. But they are completely functional and sound fantastic. I also have a pair of MS-1 that Ill probably sell. They sound similar, but the SR-125 has more bass, soundstage, and sound more "fun". Im falling in love with them already. I noticed the 125 dosent get so much credit around here which is strange. How many here have a pair and like them as much as I do?

My SR125's were my first "real" pair of headphones and I loved them to death! (Literally, my attempt to prolong their life abruptly ended it during a freak soldering accident).

I used them for several years, beat the hell out of them but loved every moment I wore them. They've since been replaced by GS1000, but I'll always have fond memories of my SR125s!

Grr you're lucky. Still trying to find pretty much any beat up Grado.
I'm guessing because most just skip to the SR225 after the SR60/SR80.

Ive never heard any higher end grado then this 125. What do the higher end grados like the RS-2 and up sound like? Is there that big of a difference, and if so, what kind of differences?

Yes, it is an improvement, but a slight improvement.
EDIT:
Ya more detail definitely. That's pretty much all I definitely know, I've only read one RS2 review and most of it went out the window after I read it. I suggest that you read as much as you can about the different Grados.

Of course its slight like everything else in hi-fi. But what about them is better? Deeper bass, more detail? Are they more transparent sounding?

i thought the ms-1 was basicaly a sr125 but cheaper.. (atleast thats what i read in one of the other topics..) i was planning to buy the ms1 and a pa2v2..

The MS-1 is a great headphone, especially for the price. You cant go wrong with it really.

What pads do the cans use, respectively?
Have you tried swapping the pads to see if there's any improvement in either of them? (Please do explain the effect of the pads change)

PS: Yeah, I even prefer my SR80s to my MS1s (both with reversed 414 pads)

The well-loved Grado like a well-loved book is dog-eared, looks like hell and has provided way more than its sticker price in enjoyment.

They are the stock pads they came with, which are the "bowl" pads I think. My MS-1 has reversed quarter modded comfies. Ill tell you the comfies are much more comfortable. But the bowls are also comfortable enough for me, and I like the way they look. Ill let you know the sound differences tonight when I get a chance to switch them around.

My 125's were my first pair fo "real" headphones.... the suckers led me into spending a LOT of money on furthering my collection of cans.

i love them for hard rock. But can only listen for so long with them... the ergonomics (even with cup mods) on Grado's just suck to me. Which is too bad because they produce some great music.
