The Sennheiser Plug Problem (1/4" to 1/8") and Amp Question

Hello all, I am fairly new to the forums but have read a good amount here before becoming a member. Right now my current headphones are the JLab JBuds J2s and the Sony XB300s. I like the J2s for noise isolation and traveling (I replaced their normal tips with foam ones which made them a lot more comfy) but I am looking for a bit more quality in terms of my "at home" headphones. I have been looking at the Sennheiser 555s which seems to suit my wants fairly well, they are open which will prevent my ears from being too warm, circumaural for comfort, have a warm sound, and sound isolation is not really an issue since these will be used for listening while doing homework and whatnot.

Anyways on to my questions...
1) Would it be possible to cut off the 1/4" plug and replace it with a 1/8" plug? I know they come with an adapter but it just seems backwards to go from big to little and from the pictures online it looks ridiculously bulky this way and seems like it would put extra pressure on the source connection.

2)Would a Fiio E5 be suitable to power these? I am a high school student so obviously money isn't abundant but I know these should have an amp.

Thanks a ton for any responses, this forum rocks!

You might check out the 595s, they are one of the better Sennheisers to use un-amped. If I were you, I would skip buying a cheap AMP, and wait until you can get a little bit more expensive one, otherwise you will be wasting some money.

The Fiio might be able to, but I seriously doubt how much you would notice it. Best to put that extra money aside and spend it towards a little more expensive amp in the future.

As for the 1/4 > 1/8, you can, but it probably won't be worth doing. You should pick up one of the grado adapters or any other one that has a little bit of cable between the connectors so the plugin doesn't get strained.

You don't know that; you've just read so much misinformation about the necessity of amps on this forum that you think every expensive phone should have an amp. :O)

The 555 sounded fine to me unamped. With regard to your second question, yes, you can cut the 1/4" and solder a 1/8". There's also the option of the floppy cable, as mentioned, but personally, I found that a poor compromise; there's still a lot of weight from the 1/4" plug and now the 1/4" adapter. It's easier to just get phones that come with a 1/8" jack to begin with (like the AD700, MS1, V6, etc).

hd555 and hd595's aren't very amp dependent. so getting one isn't a high priority in this case imho.

get the corded sennheiser 1/4 to 1/8 adapter for ~5 + ship.
