The L3000 would have been perfect. My lifespan will be quickly attenuated if my wife has to listen to my muisc (which he strongly dislikes) particularly when she is attempting to sleep (she goes to bead earlier and has to get up earlier). So I purchased the Ed9 (I think they are one of the the last ones from Northern Sound - they had 9 left). I just received the Ed9 today and obviously they have not broken in, but for now they certainly are a step down (for me) to the L3000. The moral of the story is - IAMONEAGAIN - Don't sell your L3000 phones and amp... unless you want to sell them to me. As for my set which I sold for a higher price then I had originally set (thank you Head-Fiers for your unsolicted advice) you can now purchase them on Audiogon for an even higher premium. I just hope the PS1000 & HD800 phones are good.

Yeah, I know not to sell anything before I listen to the new item and I know the L3000 are special. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't sell them even if the PS1000 sounded better. Maybe I pick up a used pair down the road if that's the case. There will probably be a few people that like the hd800 better and can't afford to keep both.

Funny you should mention that. I started out in high end audio back in grad school with a pair of the original Stax Lambdas and an SRD adaptor (don't remember the model but it was before they invented pro bias) driven by an old Marantz 85 wpc amp eons ago. I liked them more in my minds eye than the current choices....

Wow! Thank you for that detailed, carefully written review. It is very helpful to hear how you compare them to the D7000s and RS1s in particular. I really like the fun factor those two offer and would prefer the RS-1s to the GS1000s if the soundstage was bigger. I was really hoping the PS1000 would be a super fun version of the GS1000s. It sounds like a step in the right direction, but maybe not enough for my tastes. Am I off base, would the PS1000s be considered ‘fun’ headphones?

Still, I really like the GS1000s and the PS1000s do sound awesome and probably fit my tastes better. I am sure I will have them before too long. I am a bit doubtful as to whether they will be able to knock off the D7000s as my favorite, but I am hoping for just as awesome but different. That works too.

Still, where is the RS1000?

Maybe the most valuable thing of PS1000 is the good-looking ALU

I agree, they should almost be ashamed of the packagin here.

I was thinking, why didn't they just account for the cost of the packaging in the headphones. I would think that anyone who is willing to pay $1700 for these would be willing to pay $1800.

I would like to see a poll showing how many people actually even look at the packaging their headphones came after they unpack them and start using them..that is until they sell them? I would wager to say the percentage is most likely miniscule.
The word "trifling" is popping into my mind right now for some reason.
I probably shouldn't even be commenting because I don't ever anticipate buying these headphones, especially not brand new, and I agree this is trifiling or nit picking. The packaging has no bearing on the build or sound quality of the headphones. But packaging does count for something.

The cliche goes you only get one chance to make a first impression and the first impression many people are going to have of these headphones is when they open the box. Even if they demo the headphones ahead of time, their first impression as an owner - someone who just sunk a week's pay into a pair of headphones - is going to be when they open the package. It would just be that much nicer of an experience if it was packaged in a box that better conveys the luxuriousness of the item.

There are some companies out there that must think that packaging helps the bottom line otherwise everything would come in a thin cardboard box. What if Rolex said "people are going to put the watch on and when they take it off they're just going to put it on their dresser or in a jewelry case. We don't need to spend money on a fancy box. People are buying the craftsmanship of a well made timepiece, not frilly packaging."

i have bought them and whilst i would have preferred them with the box obviously, i am not that bothered about it.

i think where my angle comes in and maybe others, is that early on, initially they were advertised as coming with the box on vendors sites, TTVJ for one, and at this point people had or where in the process of placing their order, again, i shouldnt think anyone was going to not order them if they didnt come with a box, its for the headphone after all, but i think people felt a bit let down that they had bought under the impression that that was included, then to see it 'withdrawn' and avilable then only as an additional $75 item just left a slightly bitter taste

just my two cents worth.

On the whole wood box thing

I don’t really get it. I saw a thread on here recently where people debated what true vintage RS1s were. Some folks argued that unless you had the wood box they weren’t really vintage. Even though the headphones themselves clearly were. It made me wish my ancient used pair of RS1s came with that box. That way when people who said that sort of thing got close enough to me I could hit them in the head with it. In that regard I think it would indeed be far superior to a cardboard box.

Seriously, my vendor took my order (and money) when it was thoguht the box would be included. When that was later calrified he gave me a discount to offset the price of the box in light of the misunderstanding and free 2 day shipping.

Yeah. I thought about it, too. Their selling price of the box is $75, so the manufacturing cost would be like $45 (perhaps more margin..) So, they didn't even have to raise it to $1800.

This led me to wonder how much margins do high-end audio equipments companies generally mark up.

Also, I wonder what is the purpose of cheap packaging from Grado. There has to be a reason for it. I guess you can say people who can afford $1700 probably won't care too much about it. But I believe that is not the "usual" cases of majority head-fi'ers and certainly not what Grado management targets for. Maybe their purpose is simply to promote their accessory department!@#$!@#%!@$^!$#

I got a feeling it cost much less than $45....
