Random idea

There are some IEMs out there (I'm thinking specifically of the ER4P) that are great but a little bass light.

Here's a weird idea - would something like this be possible?

Recable an ER4P so that it's wired together with a bone conduction headphone. Let the Ety continue to run full range but insert a crossover so that the bone conduction phones are working just as a woofer. You'd be able to wear both at the same time and add bass to your Ety experience.

You could probably do this with a set of bass-light full size cans too, right?

Is this something that could actually be done?

Anything can be done. Maybe post this in the DIY thread and someone may just do it. Not a bad idea, BTY, but may look a little weird (but that hasn't stopped people before).

It would definitely look weird, although maybe a little less so with full size phones

Yea, I was thinking the bone conducting + ER4P, but with a full sized you wouldn't be able to tell when it is on. AmanGeorge, you wanna volunteer to try it by modding your D5000s

Ha my D5000s don't need any extra bass, but the K701s could use a kick. Don't know that I'm willing to be the first guinea pig, however, especially since I have zero electronics expertise. I did order the Zelco Outi out of curiosity, though.

Yea, I was thinking crossover the D5000s so they only produce bass and have your ER4Ps in your ears! Of course I don't expect anyone with D5000s to actually try something like that! How do you feel the mids/highs of the D5000 compare with the ER4P?

Hmm, Zelco Outi, I hope you post your impressions on Head-fi...looks interesting!

I thought about that, but I think over the ear headphones would have to be turned up reallllly loud for me to actually hear anything substantial with the Etys in my ear given their isolation.

Mids and highs of the D5000 are good, I'd say 85-90% of what the Etys offer. The mids aren't quite as forward but it all sounds good and there's a lot of detail to be had, I don't find the sound muddy at all.

I will post impressions on the Zelco when I get it - I haven't found many people talking about their impressions of bone conduction stuff around here. My only worry is that I've heard that the bass extension for bone conduction can be limited.

Well, an easy way to test it is to wear both and see how the iso works. If the D5000s are capable of "moving" your skull, you may be able to feel/sense the bass, and the isolation could cut out the mids/highs.

I am thinking of buying and modding the D2000s, but since I have the IE8s and think they sound pretty much perfect and are so comfortable I don't feel them, I am wondering if full sized would offer any benefits.

Were you saying the Zelco's are bone conducting? They don't look it, and I agree that there is little info on bone conducting here. I do recall reading about some limitations in their current generation, but interesting concept. I wonder if listening to bone conducting at a loud volume would not damage one's hearing.

I've never heard the IE8 but have read nothing but good things

Yeah the Zelco's are bone conducting. Hopefully they'll come in sometime next week.

They came in - I'll post impressions this weekend if I get a chance. Very briefly, they are very weird to wear and listen to, and I'm not sure the bass is deep/impactful enough to potentially fill the role described above. Otherwise, though, they actually don't sound too bad at all. More to come!
