Bantam DAC or gamma-1?

I have a PPAv2 and Sennheiser HD580s, and I usually listen to music from my laptop, which has (I think) fairly generic built-in sound. (It's an HDA Intel STAC92xx chipset, in case that matters.) I was browsing here and ran across mention of a couple of different DACs, and I thought it might be time to upgrade to something other than my laptop's built-in DAC. The two DACs that caught my eye were the Bantam and the gamma-1.

I like DIY, and neither project intimidates me. From what I can tell, the Bantam runs around $35 for parts, and the γ1 is in the neighborhood of $100. I only have a USB output, so I don't need the other input options on the γ1. For each DAC, what kind of a difference will I notice (a) compared to the default headphone-out on my laptop, and (b) comparing the two DACs to each other? And finally, are there any other DACs I should consider? (Cheap is better, and over $100 is definitely out. $100 might be in my budget. [I'm a poor college student. ])

One other thing—I run Linux (Ubuntu 8.10). So it would be good to know if either of the above are incompatible with Linux. (I'll do some of my own research on that in the meantime, but certainly welcome any tips.)

works

Can't help on the comparison I only have a Gamma1.

It does work with linux/ubuntu, I'm using them together right now. Just finished it a couple of days ago.

Thanks for the feedback. Enjoy your new DAC. I did some looking and it looks like the Bantam also works just fine in Linux—neither it nor the gamma-1 need special drivers or anything.

I guess that leaves just my original question—does anyone have any comments on the sound quality of the gamma-1 vs. the Bantom, and vs. my built-in audio?

I have been thinking about building a Bantam into a ppav2 with battery board as a companion to my netbook. I think the bantam might be able to fit into one battery holder space in the ppav2 battery board (but don't rely on it fitting...it's just an idea).
Both dacs should sound better than on board sound. I like the gamma1 slightly better than the Bantam, but both are great portable dacs. The gamma1 can be built as usb-only to save money due to many of the more expensive parts not being needed in the usb-only configuration (like that nifty, but expensive lighted switch, and the transformer coupled s/pdif and the optical inputs). Even with a usb-only configuration on the gamma1, the Bantam will cost quite a bit less, and be smaller (especially if built into the amp).
So, I guess I recommend the Bantam for portability and cost, and the gamma1 for sound (slightly) and flexibility of input (usb/spdif/optical).
