I'm reading that the Grados are preferable to for rock/metal music. Can any owners chime in on how they are for trance/techno? Hopefully I can find a set that does all of these genres well under $250.

After doing much research on the forum i've settled on two different head phones. I was wondering if someone could give me their take on them, the Grado sr 225 and Denon AHD 2000. Again, I will be using these for rock, metal, and trance music. I'm planning on running them through a cowon o2. I'm not sure if I will get an amp, but if I do it will be an i basso D2 or D10. Any ideas?

Either is a good choice.

Though the SR-225 is more portable, it is also a completely open headphone.
The D2000 is more comfortable, and closed.

The SR-225 are great for Rock/Metal, but can be fatiguing - so think carefully about how you b=lan to use use these and for how long each day. Either can will open you up to many upgrades in the future. Mod the D2000 (everything but the pads if you plan to use it outside) and you will have a very nice sounding headphone.
Personally, I would get the D2000.

You should visit the portable source forum here for lots of opinions. My vote is for the Sansa Clip or Fuse plus a JDS labs amp or a mini3 amp and whatever headphones you want.

Careful shopping could keep the whole package within your stated budget. And the Fuse will give you a microSD slot for potentially up to 32gb expansion in the future.

Gamma Y1 Lite DAC, SS Millett amplifier, Grado SR-225 should be decent under $500. Many choices out there at that price, could also throw in an mp3 player too for portable with the SR-225.

Grados RS1 and below, yeah, no problem. Denon, not so sure. Best way to tell is to look at impedance and sensitivity. Low impedance (32 ohm or below) and high sensitivity are good first signs for being driven unamped. They still do not tell the whole story.
