Here in Scottsdale a roll of Scotts toilet tissue is $1.00. I'm used to paying about $0.70. So I figure that they're, on average, 33% more expensive on everything else.
That's what they're counting on. They probably aren't any less expensive on many items but the "loss leaders" create that illusion.

When WalMart first appeared in Canada, located right beside the entrance were pop machines selling cans of brand name drinks at about 70% less than anywhere else. Everybody recognizes the price as a true bargain. Brilliantly, the very first WallMart item you see makes that all important first impression.... WallMart has ridiculously low prices. Then they make sale-like displays inside with a big posted price which, if you haven't compared prices, could be the same or higher than aywhere else. But you automatically assume it's a great price.

mbriant,

thanks for the heads-up. you're quite right.

actually, i do know about some of WalMart's price schemes. i guess i like to price-compare. in a lot of things, places like Home-Depot will have lower prices. but when you compare things like cereal, eggs, bread, soap, etc., WalMart has lower prices. But when I bought the last Harry Potter book, WalMart's price was higher than Target. And WalMArt is far enough away that I don't always go there, only when I'm in the neighbourhood. But you have to admit, they do have a very large food section. No Starbucks, though.

Wal Mart has driven a couple of stores out of business here. Our town is only 10,000 and can draw in only another 5,000 to 10,000 from the surrounding area. But, we have not gotten the super Wal Mart that the two nearest towns have been upgraded to. So, our Wal Mart doesn't have groceries, or the auto service.

I saw another sign the Apocalypse is upon us. I went to the town I grew up in yesterday. The independent little gas station has been replaced with a drive thru coffee shop. No, it's not a starbucks either. And the big Chevron station now has a c store where the service bays used to be. Oh and they had a new Albertsons grocery store with a gas station.

actually, a drive through coffee shop makes a lot of sense - if it is near a highway (access to downtown business area). and if service is fast enough. hope they have a rain canopy.

what do they do when someone wants a donut?

Drive through donut shops are booming here. There are two competing shops next door to each other near me. The one with the drive through has a continuous lineup and is always busy, especially first thing in the morning, while the other without a drive through has gone bankrupt twice in two years. People are too lazy to get out of their cars and I have to admit, when it's 20 degrees below in the winter, staying in your car is very attractive.

There was a drive-through SB in a Mall south of Millington, TN when I was there for a few weeks. Very convenient and it beat walking in because to me some of the hired help were snobbish.
