You really don't seem that informed about gaming consoles.

i agree..my younger brother knows a lot more about gaming consoles than me mainly because he has owned PS2, PSP and has done some modding also

...i have done PC gaming mostly.

also because i have spent most of my money on audio gear.....if i hadnt bought HD600..i would have had PS3 by now anyway.

the kids will play it on PC for free anyway..unless their elder brother intervenes and stops them.

thats a good news..because i am not buying PS3 immediately..maybe towards 2nd half of the year.

Agreed skiflyer, that's been the PS3's greatest strength. Blu-Ray players have not dropped in price enough until recently. They really need to get below $200 IMO.

I'd be interested in a $300 PS3 but the controller would be the only thing stopping me. Sony needs to design a new, more comfortable controller for me to be interested, I've never liked this design they use.

DVD version of the PS3 is comming in at a reduced price.
I don't think they'd ever make a blu-ray-less PS3, seeing as it wouldn't be compatible with all current software.

I feel that $300 is a price-point that a lot of people are waiting for. Sony stands to gain a lot of ground after the drop. The still need a couple more exclusive RPGs before they pull me into the fray though.

For the hardware, the PS3 is actually a steal. Unfortunately, Sony is not very good at marketing, and released the PS3 a few years too early, when the hardware was still way too expencive. MS could have just as easily released a console with comparable hardware, or even better. However, they too would have suffered tough console production costs and massive game production costs.

Nobody should really ever expect a decent amount of releases on the PS3. Their hardware is much to hard to develop on, and usually ends up costing studios about 3x more than if they were to make the same game on the Xbox.

With the development of DirectX11 Compute, the next Xbox is sure to have comparable processing capabilities to the PS3, while costing fractions less to develop for. Sony really should have waited for the release of OpenCL, and used that, with the PS3. Hardware would have been cheaper, and game development would be significantly easier.

Agreed. It just doesn't make sense as every PS3 games use blueray technology. Why buy would they even come out with dvd-only PS3 when they're still selling PS2 which is exactly it.

Yea, Sony made a mistake putting in the Cell processor and should have gone with a more traditional type of CPU. Cell is hard to program for. The GPU (video) in the 360 is more powerful than the one in the PS3 too but not by much. One big advantage of the PS3 is that the HDD is non-proprietary. 360 120GB HDD costs more than it would cost to put a 500GB in the PS3. Next month I am going to put in a 500GB HDD in my PS3 and put my 200GB MP3 collection on it.

I think most people think it's expansive because they see xbox360 selling for a lot cheaper and they expect the same or lower price point for the PS3 as well. They obviously are different consoles with different hardware. But most people just don't realize that and think game consoles are all the same. If one doesn't care about the whole blueray wave that's happening, then it may be wise to just buy xbox 360 and be done with it. (Most of the PS3 titles are coming out on xbox360 anyways.) But considering the fact that PS3 has a highly regarded and capable blueray player (not those $150 Chinese blueray players), it is still such a bargain.

Of course, cheaper would be always better, though.

I got it for 250$ with their Sony playstation card. I had 100$ gift card as well and used that for an extra controller and a game. I personally think the only thing that looks good about it is the shiny black (but its a challenge to keep it that way), its fat and awkwardly shaped. I dont like that it cant output audio through HDMI and optical simultaneously. I shouldnt have to go switch audio options when I want to just get audio from my TV for say downloaded tv shows or something and then switch it back when I want my surround system to kick in for gaming, its a big pain.

My xbox does both HDMI and optical audio simultaneously. Also netflix on xbox is awesome. There arent a ton of movies, but there are quite a few decent movies (some I wouldnt mind watching a second or third time), and its definitely worth 8 bucks if you already have xbox live.

Media steraming is more consistent on PS3 however, the xbox doesnt find tversity always, and I dont like media center all that much its too dumbed down.

Games, xbox wins hands down as of now. Killzone 2 might bring the PS3 back up a notch but I am extremely ticked off that PS2 games wont work on PS3. I wanted to play God of War 2 and found out I can't and I have to buy the PS2. Cmon sony, this is just cheap! Pathetic money grubbing.

The PS3 remote is bluetooth, much better laid out and easier to use. Blu ray movies are unnecessarily expensive, but if you can find a few for good price, they look great. HD DVD on the other hand, goes for 5-10 bucks in Fry's and there are some fairly decent movies on there well worth 5-10 bucks. If you have an xbox and you dont have the drive, you can get it at Fry's for 50 bucks and they are pretty much the only store still stocking HD DVD's (Amazons pretty good as well). Grab em while you can, its worth it.

Until Bluray becomes more affordable, and PS3 has more decent games, its definitely overpriced. Its premium priced for being "future proof" but there is no rush to get it right now unless you really really wanna play Killzone 2 or MGS 4.

The problem isnt really the Blurday player with the PS3. All game console developers ("all" = Xbox, Microsoft, Nintendo lol) really depend on the development and sales of games to make money. These companies usually lose money on console sales, but make up for it with the games.

Unfortunately, nobody wants to develop for the PS3. The machine is just outright hard to develop for. The Xbox360 sits on the easy to use XNA/DirectX platform, the Wii sits on a tried and true N64 code platform, while the PS3 is just a **** storm. This is why most games released on the Xbox360 and PS3 end up looking better on the Xbox360.

Without any sales of games, they are forced to keep the prices of the consoles higher to cut their losses. Losing battle.

It's been reported the BD movies will be coming down in price as it is a big deal as to whether BD survives or not. I am already seeing lowered prices on some older titles. Paying $28.00 CAD for a BD title I can get in the DVD bargain bin for $5.99 CAD is just not going to happen. Film quality has a lot to do with if you can precieve much of a difference in BD quality too. I would not waste my money on a BD version of any Woody Allen movies for example because he uses lo-fi tech.

The hard drive prices for the Xbox bug me. They're just insane.

I'm not sure why you think the next Xbox is going to have comparable processing capabilities to the PS3 (instead of surpassing it) when in terms of gaming capabilities the PS3 isn't far ahead of the 360 or anything. In fact while the cell processor as mentioned multiple times in this thread is very good for certain things, it definitely doesn't have a home or strong love in gaming. Maybe some day, but it isn't the best tool for the job right now.

Dell Home has the 80gb version for $319 after coupon code: PLDWH47D$6BT2J (expires 2/25/09)

Dell : PlayStation PLAYSTATION 3 Gaming Console with 80 GB Hard Drive : Games : Home & Home Office

btw, i think the ps3 is more expensive because it has a blu-ray player and you don't need to pay to play online like the 360

Because it still sell in high numbers? Hmmm

Cell processors are extremely efficient for gaming. They are multi parallel processors optimized for floating point calculation. Right now, people just utilize the GPU for this kind of thing if they dont want to strain the CPU, but using the GPU for non graphics computation takes away from graphics.

The reason why I say that the next Xbox will not have drastic improvements to the CPU, is because it probably wont. Most likely, we are going to see a dedicated floating point parallel processing unit on it, as the PS3 already has. In fact, with a parallel processing unit, their tri core processor would probably be an overkill.
