LHS, maybe it's an issue with the onboard sound drivers, or perhaps they won't play nice with the 0404 USB's drivers? But I'm assuming you've already tried disabling onboard sound in the BIOS...

I'll add that I've played games with relatively heavy system requirements (Quake 4, Unreal Tournament 3, BF2 set to high, etc.) on an Athlon 64 3200+ machine with 1 GB RAM and never heard a single blip from the E-MU 0404 USB.
iirc he tried optical output from the onboard sound and it still had issues, although I might be thinking of a different thread

Oh, that could be... In that case, now would be a good time to test the 0404 USB with another source so that it can be ruled out as the cause of the problem. If the motherboard is the problem, other DACs won't work any better. Motherboards aren't too expensive these days.

Given his specs, either the motherboard is defective, there's a driver issue that needs to go through troubleshooting, or the 0404 USB is defective (and I doubt it's the latter).

It's been fixed. I updated the latest LAN drivers (Which just came out last month), and also the onboard sound drivers (which I wouldn't think would make a difference). I don't know what these things have to do with a USB device, but I guess computers are just like that.

My thought exactly. It is just so weird that things like that would make a difference.

Sadly, it turns out the problem has not gone away. I installed some games I haven't played in a while, and they have a similar problem. It's not so much a crackling sound now, it is just a lot of pops. Probably a pop every 3 or 4 seconds, so it gets pretty annoying. What could be the problem now?

The only thing I can think of trying is installing XP with no ACPI. However, make sure you're using the reference drivers straight from nVidia and not the manufacturers drivers.

Can you try disabling both the LAN and Audio in the bios and test?
