Production costs for a $150,000 car will be at least $75,000 while producing the $1700 PS 1000 will cost Grado most certainly less than $250.

I would have to say that it is more like around $500,000. The average car is around $30K here in the states. The average headphone is around $50-$100. Divide $100 into the cost of a PS-1K, times that by the average cost of a car and voila! You're driving a Pagani Zonda.

Where did you pull that number from? I think the Head-Fi scrubber would turn my guess into asterisks, but you don't have any clue how much it costs to produce and you are most definitely off base at that amount.

I can guess where the number came from, it rhymes with class.

Just to let you know, I tried my hardest to come up with an appropriate euphemism, but was unsuccessful.

Nice looking headphone. Bad plastic block adjusters.

If you look at things that way, spending $95 on a pair of Grado SR80 is also like $1500,000 on a car when you're upgrading from Apple Earbuds. No one would say SR80 are expensive though.I think $1700 is $1700 no matter what you spend it on.
Somehow people have different concept about what's expensive and what's not. For most people, adding thousands on extras when buying a new car is okay, but spending $200 on a pair of headphones is excessive.
I think it's fine to spend $1700 on cans if you can afford it. After all people splash out a lot more on speakers. one or two thousands might not even get you to high end territory if you are talking about amps. To me the issue is not so much about how expensive they are, but how unproven they are. I get excited about PS1000 just like everyone else too but I want to wait for more comments and listen to them before I part with my cash.

I would rather buy a pair of $1700 headphones, then a $50.000 car. Atleast the headphones keep their value a bit :x

Well, this was in fact pure speculation – inspired only by looking at the well known headband.

At least they're not spray painted silver.

I presume the expected first delivery date has slipped?

To be honest, I really don't see it happening with the PS-1000 unless there are a lot of confirming opinions rolling in after more people have heard them (besides Zanth). But yes, I think the HD800 will be a big hit. I'm very doubtful on the PS-1000. My guess is that sales will be quite slow at first. But who knows where it might go from there.

Maybe that's just me, but I see the PS-1000 as merely another one of Grado's spin off products and not something that represents anything new in terms of design, use of technology, or any matter of substance. As a result, I know that I'll sure be reluctant. If ever I do pull the trigger on the PS-1000 it will be because they sound so dang good that I simply can't help myself. But I'll still be grumbling about how Grado managed to grab me by the short and curlies again despite the fact that... oh, nevermind. No sense in getting myself all wound up again.

Does anyone else have a problem with Grados sticking your head? I have a pair of 225 that I retired because I couldn't listen to them to whilst reclined. They fall right off!
