When I placed my order with Todd last week, the updated info he provided said they would be shipping within 1-2 weeks.

I imagine they will start going out in the next few days.

Sure. It's been discussed in the various forums here for the past week or so.

A particularly "wry sense of humor!"

And... most appropriate.

I never cease to be amazed at the number of folks who actually think any $1,000+ headphones, can be "so-o-o much better" (proportionate to their price premium) than the moderately priced phones in any of these lines.

I don't think as many people as you think actually think that. Sometimes people buy things because they want to and because, to their ears, it sounds "better" in one way or another, not necessarily in proportion to anything, just better. If they can afford it and figure they won't lose too much on resale, they don't necessarily think of the price as a permanent investment.

Of all of the headphones I own, some of the most expensive ones that I've ever purchased (whether in the new or used market) are each now worth, on average, about $1,000 more than what I paid for them. I'm talking specifically about the HE90, R10, PS-1, Qualia 010, L3000, K1000, HP-2 and a couple of others. That never ceases to amaze me. Everything else (the run of the mill stuff like the HD650, K701, and SA5000 varieties) have gone down in value.

Wayne, which of that group are you bringing to the meet Saturday?

Obscene?

$1695!!!!
The economy is collapsing, people are losing their homes, unemployment approaching 8% and Grado introduces a headphone for $1700....seems like this group is a bit out of step with the rest of the country. How much better can this phone be than a great pair of 650"s??????

so then you will not be buying a pair huh?

Here's one for us all--

... and people are spending time on a headphone site instead of looking for jobs or working through lunch on their existing job or worse just on a site to relax where the slogan is "Welcome to head-fi. Sorry about your wallet."

Yep, clearly he could have not released this at a worse time... well maybe a year down the road would be worse considering projections on where we are headed... yes, I think it will get much worse, I don't don't think we are near the bottom yet.

However, while doing R&D on this phone, there was no way he could have predicted what was to come. And he couldn't just not release if for 2 years or so. It is what it is. And I'm sure Grado along with all other companies will be hurting in sales.

Agreed. I've already discussed this a bit in another thread, but I'll type it up again.

This move (like Sennheiser) could be part of their business plan due to the economic environment.

They're creating a high profit margin product. Grado isn't exactly a widely known company (among audiophiles yes, but otherwise no). So if they try to create a new headphone for the everyman, their customer base will barely change, totally defeating the purpose for such a move. And not to mention create a huge deficit due to their R&D efforts.

On the other hand concentrating on the existing customer base, who's more than willing to pay for $1000+ products, was by far the smartest move. Despite the state of the economy, tons of head-fiers are still willing to buy both the HD800s and PS1000s.

Due to the economic climate, obviously they won't garner as much profits as an economic upswing, but it'll help the company's balance sheet far more than if they attempted to subsist off current product sales.

This is what is happening with guitars too - both Fender and Gibson, the big boys, raised their prices across the board by ridiculous amounts. And yep, folks will buy em. But they wouldn't pull the trigger for, say, Daisy Rock. Whenever you get a flagship fight between the heavy hitters of the headphone world, sparks will fly and so will money out of wallets.

Very well said.

As a long time fan of Fender *and* Gibson guitars ... I have to concur.

A good fight among elite providers does nothing but improve and energize and make more interesting The Scene(tm), overall ...
