new CD player or DAC?

Hey everyone... I just picked up a Little Dot I+ for my K701s and now I can tell how bad my source really is (Cambridge Audio DV89). I can only spend about $400 and I'm wondering if I'm better off buying a DAC and using my Sony DVP-S7700 as a transport or just getting something like a Marantz CD5003 for about $350. I can use the DV89 for SACD playback so having that capability isn't necessary for my new setup.

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

You are putting $400 in a dac. You could run your CA into it as well. I think it would be a better increase in sq than the same priced cdp.

I vote for the dac too and actually i am having an internal debate about the same thing in a higher price bracket too so i know where your coming from.

I think the real question is how much you value computer audio. If you do any degree then the only answer is a DAC.

dallan,

Do you prefer your DAC magic or the x-dac? I'm not sure that it matters but I mainly listen to jazz and rock.

Thanks for the help.

I would get another DAC. Why? Because you also have got yourself a nice transport already that is also capable of playing SACD.
Furthermore most DACs have more than one input so you can hook multiple transports to it.

another vote for the dac!
have you considered the MF v-dac?
mine improves the sound from my sony dvp-ns92v no end.

These are my thoughts too.

That's a good point about the multiple inputs. I hadn't even considered that advantage.

Thanks...

If you had something like this DAC1 PRE Overview | Benchmark Media Systems, Inc. then all you would need is a power amp and speakers or some active monitors, 2 birds with one stone.

The same can be done with the Monarchy Audio NM24 DAC, it has a built in Line Stage which can double as a headphone amp.

I like that.

Go DAC, my cdp just collects dust. In the future you might hook up a pc or hdd based transport, which makes cd transports redundant, and removed all the problems associated with real-time reading , error correction etc.
