In other words is the wall wart just for charging or can/will the amp be powered by the wall wart when plugged in?
I seem to remember that the Isabella had a switch to change between wall wart and battery but maybe I got this wrong...

Thanks again,
Hi Chris,

The Amphora's wall wart charger is only for charging. You can leave it plugged in at all times if you wish, but when the Amphora is switched ON, the charger is disconnected via the ON/OFF switch and you are only playing on battery power. When the Amphora is switched OFF, the battery is charging.

There is a light on the charger that is RED when charging, and GREEN when finished charging. Charging is quick (anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours - depending on how many hours the Amphora was used for).

Regarding the Isabella, you are correct in that there is a feature to allow for playing and charging at the same time. The reason we offered this is because the playtime of the Isabella is approx. 6 hours. Even though we are using much larger batteries, the Isabella draws a lot more current from the batteries for the tube heaters. We do have some customers who wish to play longer than 6 hours, so this feature is important for them.

With the Amphora, you can easily play longer than 24 hours on a full charge, so we did not design in this feature.

Best regards,

Vinnie

What would be the sonic differences between using the headphone output from the Red Wine Isabella and the Amphora? I only require the headphone amp (no preamp needed) and I own the Isabellina DAC (nice DAC by the way).

I had the preproduction unit for a couple days. I also have an Isabella with DAC / headphone output.

Assuming both are fed by the same source (Isabella), to my ears they sounded the same. (Amphora uses Isabella's headpone board).

When will the Amphora be available? Is there a waiting list? I don't see anything on the ALO website concerning the amp. Thanks! And any thoughts about how it might drive the new flagship headphones HD800 and PS1000?

Hi crucial,

Yes - Ken of ALO Audio started the waiting list:
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f70/al...ml#post5444252

We are hoping to begin shipping in mid-March. ALO is not taking payment upfront, but has a growing waiting list and once we have Amphoras ready to ship, he will contact those on the wait list.

We are working on the website - within a week it should be up.

The Amphora should drive the new HD800s and the PS1000s just fine!

Best regards,

Vinnie

Hey Guys,

I have an Amphora burning in now, Vinnie and I are going to add more content on the webpage that we are building now but I just wanted to quickly point out a few very early observations. We will expand on more nuggets on the website.

First the dual headphone out, 1/4 and mini is awesome. Vinnie designed the amp board so that I hear no decrease in gain or volume when running a pair of cans at the same time. I find this to be a huge plus when critically comparing headphones, also its great not to have to look all over the place for an adapter jack.

I normally do not do this kind of posting but I am seriously excited.

Again its very early and this one is not burned in but I am ticked to death to hear this level of definition, resolve and refinement. The Amphora is so incredibly non fatiguing and I am able to listen for hours with ease. I have been using a pair of Edition9s and will move on to some Grados shortly. I am hearing notes that are much more defined, layered and trail longer with excellent decay. When these same notes would normally be truncated, not so with the Amphora. In short the level of ultra high refinement coupled with its mature musicality and warmth with the Amphora is for sure the amps shining star... more to follow.

We hope to get a batch out to people mid March. We are finding the production of the wood enclosures more challenging than we had anticipated but something this special deserves the effort.

Thanks for the updates Ken + Vinnie. I'll be marking mid March on my calendar . I can't wait to hear more details on the sound quality and its development with burn in.

What is the weight of an Amphora?

Looks lovely and sounds promising !

Would Ken or Vennie share the overall dimensions ?

And will there be an option of a larger battery - so that I can bring it along on short trips in the woods ?

Thanks,
F. Lo

Really stunning looking amplifier!
Love the woodwork, the slim design, battery powered operation (like the RWA gear), iPod dock, and the fact that it looks solid built.

All the best, to you both and the 100 lucky customers!
