Cowon S9 vs Sony X1000 - Page 4

When I first got my Cowon S9 and started using it I thought, good enough player, above average. Then I updated the firmware and it's like a different machine to me now, has so many more features it never had before.

The sound quality to me is fine, up to par with anything else. I use the BBE Viva 2 setting, widens the sound abit. I can't complain about the S9 at all though, massive battery life, I'd recommend it. The firmware it shipped with though was lacking big time. Luckily it only takes a minute to upgrade.

My IE8's probably have alot to do with the great sound though, massive bass, everything clear and crispy.

I agree with the S9. After 2.31b I was happy with everything except the user interface. That was until I installed the Claw UI. Seriously a must for every S9 user.

I must try this Claw UI as some of the standard UI confuses the hell out of me (for example, wanting to change album, you have to go up a branch, and then move to the right... why not just allow you to go another level up?!)

Re a comparison between this and the Sony X - I have been thinking about this, and it will probably be one of the hardest comparisons I have yet made...

Hey Duncan, I read about the confusing UI a while ago which is what put me off entertaining the idea of an S9, since it's not supposed to be intuitive at all. But now... hmmmm LOL!!

If it turns out to be the hardest comparison you ever made, the X and the S9 must be very very close. Tooooooooooooooooo exciting, I await your review while sitting right on the edge of my seat

Oops, I fell off..........

EDIT: Guess what???? Yes, I did............ well, I couldn't NOT!!!

Okay...

By no means a review, or anything of the sort - just an observation to maybe whet the appetite (or not, as the case may be?!?)

...Anyways - to me, using BBE Viva on the S9 (as I really cannot do the 'normal', it sounds bleh to me) and using the Sony as stock (other than I like using the Clear Stereo), the easiest analogy is that the Sony is to Vinyl as the S9 is to CD...

Hope this little snippet helps

I have to admit, I love my S9. I'm glad I didn't get an X1000 to try though, I'd have been totally confused w/these 2 players. Personally, I think the feature set is right on the S9 - so I made the right decision. Plus, the SQ is crisp & clean - just the way I like it.

Hmm, desert island, gun to my head... Begrudgingly I would say the S9... The trouble with only taking one is that they seem to compliment each other... what genre one is not so good with, the other picks up on and vice versa... I have a feeling that when I do this comparison, the winner will be decided by genre choice...

I really like the S9 with R&B for example, its extra energy over the X is welcomed, yet for vocal tracks, the warmth of the X takes it...

Not an easy choice!

Hi,not really experienced in Portable stuff,but compared to HiFi think the 'X'(with FX500's),is average'ish,maybe a touch of warmth,certainly not warmth compared to some valve amps & other stuff etc.Heard iPods & others(prob with cheap HP's),some of those were a bit cool,digital,not real full bodied sound etc(if those are the right words).

Do you think change is good as a rest,especially with sound signatures?Or new to,always/can sounds better,well till the newness wears off maybe?Just wonder if there are factors?Even if only subconsciously.
Would have thought headphones used(certainly a variety used,dear to cheap etc on other DAP etc reviews iv'e read,thats if you know whats been used),synergy etc,would make comparing more complex.Plus individuals sound signature preference etc,which i suppose can change from time to time.
S9 looks to beat 'X' on numerous things apart from audio,that must sway peeps a bit.Even if main priority is audio quality.
Ramblings
These are questions,not answers ,not sure how they affect me etc.
When you see those street surveys or whatever,can you tell which is what,food etc,organic non-organic etc,surprised how many get them wrong

I haven't tried the X1000 yet, so no personal comments on the quality of the sound from that PMP. As for the sound chip, according to a few posters on ABI's forums, the X1000 uses a slightly older sound chip (Wolfson?) than the S9 does. The difference in sound quality is supposedly minimal and most people may not be able to tell the difference.

I own the 32 GB version of the S9 (Titanium/Black) and have had it for 2 days now. Updated it to 2.31b2 firmware (gapless MP3 playback support) and have the Aero Ultimate G1 v.4.00 UI installed. Loving every second of it paired up with my Senn HD201s and my UE SF3. Also watch plenty of videos on there (including anime) and the screen is breathtakingly gorgeous. Only wish the 7+ LCD screens in the house also were OLED screens.
